Close to buying 2011 5.0
Currently have 5.7 2005 fx4 3:73 gears Screw full load. I Pull 7500# a few times camping in the summer ( no mountains) . Came across same truck but 2011 with 5.0l
1) any common problems similar to the ones in the 04-08 range? I'm asking if anything has arose from that generation to be common problems that need to be addressed or surprises that suck , ie) spark plugs in the 04-08 or the phaser noise , exhaust leaks.
2) aware the rating is 9000# ish in the manual . Real life does this tow its max weight with ease or is it really making it work harder than it should? If I bought this could I take 7500# up some decent grades on a pull through the Rockey Mountains.? Thanks in advance .

I will try to help since no one else has replied.
1. Not many issues with these engines compared to the 5.4 3 valve's. Should be fine there.
2. Really depends on the rearend gear the truck has, also i'm sure it could handle the 9k lbs on flat lands but i wouldn't expect it to do very well going up and over mountain passes.
This is where the EcoBoost would shine.
But then again if you are use to towing 7500lbs with the 5.4 then the 5.0 should put it to shame towing the same weight.
Maybe some of the 5.0 owners will jump in soon.

How much are you gonna be driving in the Rockies? A 5.0 with the right gears can do it but if you plan on doing it often I would look for an EB. I've driven through the Rockies with a loaded camper and once the grades got steep the engines with forced induction really pulled away from the NA trucks. Your only options for FI are turbo diesel 3/4 tons and the EB. Now if you're gonna do it once every year or so it's not a deal breaker, you will just be hampered at the higher elevations.
[QUOTE=KingRanchCoy;5150271]Hopefully your 05 f150 doesn't have a 5.7 in it,

Lol, nice catch!! 5.4 it is
Thanks for the reply , maybe annually with the Mountains . Generally just summer camping , 3000km per year

The 5.0's tow pretty well, we used a buddies (2011 Scab with 3:55) to tow a 4 place enclosed sled trailer (6000#ish with 4 sleds), 4 guys and it had no problems at all. Just don't expect to be doing 75 mph.
Also this was through the Rockies (Revelstoke/Golden area) to ride in the mountains.

I purchased my 2011 f150 5.0 super cab XTR 4x4 with the 3:55 rear end back in march, I recently took it out for my first camping trip of the year towing my #5,000 travel trailer with my #600 quad in the bed I live in Vancouver B.C. and traveled to Merrit B.C. through the Coquihalla highway a steep mountain pass the truck handled phenomenally and easily held most grades at 120 Km/h.

I have a '13 5.0 scab, and I'll throw in my $.02 . Last summer I regularly pulled a 10k+ dump trailer, and the truck pulled better than any previous trucks I ever owned!- Including the 460 camper special(s)! Yes, I know I was waayyy over the rated max, but I really didn't have much choice at the time. Let me tell you, I was truly impressed with the pulling power of this truck. I'm sure the EB would out shine it in the mountains, but I'm an old-school type that lives out here in the fly-over flat lands, and I am perfectly happy with an old-school(?) port injected V8, with no cylinder deactivation, thank you. Some day I will venture to the land of hair dryers, but for at least another five years. Fact is- when Ford announces for real that they are gonna finally kill off the coyote in F150s, I might just run out and buy one of the last ones because I love 'em so much
