Hey folks,

Well, its time I guess. Kind of a benchmark for my new-to-me 2011 F150 supercew cab xlt. My tires are plum worn out.

Heres the question: I have to replace my tires but I dont want to break the bank and I don't want to go so cheap that I regret my decision or that I end up paying more in the long run. Any recommendations on:
- brand/series
- places to buy
- things to avoid?

Here are some details that may help:
- current tires are Michelin LTX/AT2
- size 265/70 r17
-Location SW Virginia
- primary use of vehicle: Kids soccer games, towing the boat to the lake, mostly short trips. She gets used several times a week, but I doubt I will put 12k miles on her in a year. She does take the whole fam on some longer 9-12 hour trips a couple of times a year.

Any thoughts or suggestions? What would you expect to pay out the door for 4 decent-to-good tires???

 

I ran these on my 04 Screw and was far and away the best tire I've ever bought and that includes the Michelins. The link is to Discount Tire but they may have locations in your area called Americas Tire. These tires ride fabulous and unlike a Michelin, don't get brick hard as they age. The size 265/65/17 looked perfect on the truck. They were quiet, handled fabulous in the rain or dry. About the only thing I can't comment on is snow. We don't have it here but we do get ice. It handled ice like it wasn't there but I also wasn't driving like I stole it either. They even worked great at the ranch and I never had a flat in our cactus and low brush of South Texas. When the new truck needs tires, these are what will go on it except my new one has 20" wheels. Another plus, and you need to really be careful here, these tires didn't hammer the gas mileage. I intentionally looked for a tire with high air pressure to get passed rolling resistance. These did not hammer the gas mileage and actually gave me back some I lost from a set of Continentals that were supposed to be gas savers. Give them a look. They impressed me a lot and I consider them to be the best road tire for any F150. Air pressure for this size tire was 51 lbs cold. NO, the higher air pressure didn't make them ride like they were iron. They rode great.

I also had the Yokohama Geolanders for the last set on my 03 King Ranch.. It was a good tire for sure.. Beat the Continental and Bfgs i had on it previously..

I would also recommend if you have a discount tire store near you or if you order from discount tire online check out the Cooper Discoverer ATP's.. This is the tire i replaced my Michelin's with on my 13.. I jumped up to a 275/65/18 and so far the tires have been great.. Ive got about 12k miles on them now and no noticeable tire wear.. Still look like they are new.. Pretty quite on the road, 55k warranty and 135.00 per tire..

My friend is running these and has had great luck also.. More of a highway tire.. Hes got 50k miles on the set and still has 30 percent tread..

The Michelin LTX MS2 tire is very well known for its superior ride quality and long tread life.

The closest alternative is the new Bridgestone Dueler HL Alenza Plus. It too has a very good ride quality, traction in all areas and also offers an 80K mile warranty. It is Bridgestones latest and greatest technology, using its high silica content which enhances traction in wet weather, provides a great ride quality and prolongs treadwear. You can find it here

My other recommendation would be the sister tire of the Bridgestone, the Firestone Destination LE2. A little less $$ than the Bridgestone, but it still has a great ride quality to it. I think the tread life will be a bit shorter with the LE2, however.

I'm a big fan of Toyo Open Country AT II tires. I bought my current set from Tire Crawler but have also bought from Online tires too. It all depends on who has the tire you need in inventory; but the closer the shipping warehouse, the lower the shipping costs. These are the tires that are just now showing up on the new Super Duties with 20" rims. No more 20" Michelins that were used at least the past five years.
