Changing Oil Choice

Im going to start to chage my own oil.I have a 2011 with the 5.0.
What oil and brand would be a good choice.
I plan on using a NAPA filter.

I personally use motorcraft semi-synthetic in the 5w-20 weight. It's what they put in at the factory.

5-20 Motorcraft blend works great. I change every 5000.

Ditto- 3rd. Motorcraft filter.

I also installed a Fumoto valve- was necessary with my lift to clear the lift cross member. Very clean and easy- run a tube right to any oil container- no more drain pans.

I heard that Fram filters were better...

But seriously, I'm impressed this thread has been live since this morning and an oil war hasn't started. But I'd love to see somebody post in a Honda or Fiat-Chrysler forum and tout Motorcraft oil as the superior choice. I'd almost pay to see that!

Short version is that your truck is equipped with an intelligent oil life monitor. Previous models used a primitive indicator based solely on time and mileage (mine times out at 6 months or 7,500 miles - whichever comes first). Your system adjust based on a number of factors to provide you with the ideal oil change interval. The engineers who designed it put a lot of effort and testing into this feature and it's worth abiding by.

So, assuming you're using that system and not wasting oil, there's lots of options. If you like NAPA Filters, the Gold or Platinum are the way to go. I generally use Motorcraft filters and Mobil1 EP 5w-20, but if there's a deal going on with a Wix/NAPA Gold or Mobil1 Filter along with a jug of Mobil1 EP, I usally jump on that.

Pro-tip: Don't buy a five quart jug and three extra quarts. It's cheaper to buy two 5-quart jugs and you'll have two quarts leftover for the next change. I'd say for topping off, but every Ford I've owned since my new '03 Marauder burns less than a quart of oil between changes. For me, I go every 7,500 miles and maybe lose 1/2 quart in that time. So I have on my shelf a few quarts in a jug and the next change I'll only need to buy one.

Unrelated note: I use Motorcraft filters and plugs on any imports I work on (when available) just to confuse or **** off the next guy. Passively trolling.

I use MC oil in My Jeep, mower, truck, and I shower with it. Light my charcoal with it, and I resealed my deck with MC!

The Walmarts around here just started carrying FL500's around a month ago. Advance Auto has had them for almost 3 years.
