Can it be done ?

All and any help is most appreciated.

My 2011 F 150 rear end gear ratio is 315. Situation--- One wheel spins the other wheel, is resting (does nothing--power is not transferred to the silent wheel.) Ford has confirmened this is the case with the 315.

Can I install a positive traction, differential, in this vehicle ? If this is possible, how would I go about making the change.

Ford thought it was possible to--

Install an entire new rear end, believe the gear was a 375. However to get the positive traction or differential to engage, I have to install an electric switch that the driver engages.

Thanks in advance for your words of wisdom.

Tim

Depending on which differential you have, it could be possible to put in an aftermarket limited slip differential that doesn't need the switch.

I don't see why you would need a whole new rear end. You should be able to find an aftermarket limited slip or locker for what you have.

A tip: let the traction control do its thing. When the wheel starts spinning, use your left foot to feather the brake, the other wheel should start to turn.

You should be able to put a detroit locker or some other locker in the current diff that is a mechanical locker without the need of an electric switch.
I would stay away from limited slips, because when pushed to hard, they still slip.

A good mechanic should be able to install that into your axle for you. No need to switch housings, or gear ratios if you like the 3.15 gear. I would guess that you are not pulling much of anything with that gear?

An aftermarket unit should fit the 9.75" rear diff in your truck. Be careful though, I believe the carrier is different on the gears higher (numerically smaller) than 3.55. I believe this has a large part to do with why Ford has never offered a factory LS unit on the 3.15 or 3.31. The LS option always started with the 3.55 and up.

I don't understand... Traction control should be taking care of this problem.
Did you turn off your traction control???
If you didn't turn it off, then you must have a fuse burned out or some other problem.

Positive Traction--slip differential

Have a 2011 F150, rear end gear ratio is 315. By design this gear ratio does not provide positive traction. Regardless of the situation, only right wheel pulls.

What is the answer to get positive traction ?

Thank you for your ideas and help.

Get an aftermarket limited slip, locker, etc.

Traction control cannot negate the fact that he has an open differential.

I put a Eaton "Detroit" Truetrac in my truck. My truck has 3.73 but they say it works with any gear ratio. I bought mine 1.5 years ago for $515 shipped. Looks like they went up since then.

Did you post this question somewhere else. seems like I answered this very same question yesterday.
Anyway, I would put something like a detroit locker in it. That will positively lock when one wheel spins and the other is not. I wouldn't do a limited slip, because if they are pushed, they will still slip anyway. I would go with the locker.
For the record, the rear end you have, could have a traction adder in it, its just that your truck was not ordered that way.
Are you going to pull with this truck? If so, I would look at changing to a 3.73 or something like. It will give you more mechanical advantage than that tall gear you have now. And, since you are removing the gear anyway, this would be a good time to change them.

All traction control does is shut the engine down when it senses slip. That doesn't have anything to do with whether you have two wheels pulling or one wheel pulling. It just means that the engine will shut down quicker because its a one wheel peel.

I think he's asked this question in like 5 different posts so far.

Traction control works with the ABS system and SHOULD apply the brake on the spinning wheel, enabling the other wheel to start spinning.
