Warranty Coverage Question re Steering Wheel
Wondered if anyone here has had this happen to them or perhaps works for a dealer. My 2010 F150 is still under the factory 36/36 factory bumper to bumper warranty. The steering wheel is breaking down where my thumbs rest against the spokes and the surface has lost its outer "skin" and is kind of sticky and rough. The dealer told me that it is not a covered item because it was caused by my hands on the wheel. I said what??? It is whee you place your hands to drive and the surface is not durable enough to stand up to normal use! They said "they know" Ford will reject the claim, I call BS.
Ideas? Comments? Thanks.

Would think that would be covered... Although, I was looking at a demo Platinum one time... They weren't taking much off the price for the miles and they said no way when I wanted the steering wheel replaced where the "wood grain" was eaten away on the top part of the steering wheel. Truck had like 2,500 miles on it... Somebody had to have gotten a chemical or something on it to do that in so few miles. I skipped that truck and bought a new one... Haven't had it do that yet.

I'd be inclined to politely ask them to show me a similar year vehicle with comparable number of miles on it. If that comparable vehicle had similar wear on the same place, it probably "takes the water out of the fire hose" (I'm a fire guy too, so I can make the pun).
On the other hand, if the comparison vehicle isn't showing the same type of wear, then I might press the issue.
A while back I had a Crown Vic for my department vehicle. The floor mat was getting thread bare where the heel of my foot rested before it was a year old. It was taken to the dealer and their first reaction was to say "that's normal wear and tear". I pointed out that our fire department had purchased dozens of Crown Vics over the years and that was the only one that did that. A different song was then sung.

It would appear that your steering wheel should (?) be covered (albeit prorated - 1-12,000 100% / 12,001-24,000 60% / 24,001-36,000 30%)..

"That is a wear and tear claim, and much like break pads or tires it will be rejected as a warranty claim...."
Since when has a steering wheel been a "wear and tear" item????? I've never heard of one wearing out unless a dog chewed it up or some such. It SHOULD be covered IMO! Ask them to SHOW you anything in writing that says steering wheel is a wear and tear item! Better yet, demand a copy and post it on the net! IF there is any such list, I bet it would costs them a bunch of sales!

After doing a little search there are numerous threads on ford forums complaining that they wont replace it...
I did find out that several people was able to look up the email address to the VP of Ford Customer Service and they took care of it..

Thanks very much for the offer. I just got a call from my dealer after using the supplied link to contact ford and they have agreed to replace the wheel. I guess sometimes you have to push back a little
