I think there has been a vast improvement in our trucks over the years, although there maybe less metal.
Correct ! We now have much better power trains available . It is the other bits that fall apart now . Not so long ago , an engine may only last 70k . We are well into the 200-300 k range now . So , the other bits should be better designed ,but are not . There is a design reason behind this fault . CAFE regulations and design for replacement .

CAFE isn't the only reason. Cost is another. What bits don't last as long today as they did 40 years ago? Enlighten us? Sure, things break, but no more often than they did 40 years ago.

If it weren't for that plastic and other cost-cutting measures, trucks would be even more expensive than they are today. Just think how much more luxury is built into vehicles today than there was 40, or even 10, years ago. And, granted, new vehicles cost a lot, but compared to inflation, you get a lot more for your money today than 40 years ago. And your vehicle will last 3 times as long.
