My running boards sing. Why?

I put the Ford running boards (black, no chrome) on my 2013 XL regular cab (8-ft. box). And they sing to me!

If I run through puddles or standing water, spray hits the side steps and sends a sound into the cab like Peruvian reed pipes. Nice, but annoying.

I bought a set of 4 Ford mud flaps and installed the fronts in an attempt to quiet that. No dice.

This happen to you? Any solutions? I want that sound GONE.

Craig

Sure you've checked this, but are the bolts that hold them on super tight? Do you think it's the steps vibrating ever so slightly and making them resonate? I wonder if the supplied brackets and bolts aren't enough support for them to stay completely still

the tube style running boards on my moms truck make this sound when i spray them with the hose. and they are circular and metal so it makes sense in a way i guess.

Rock and Roll?

Songs about trucks??

I can't even get mine hum anything.

My windows sometimes whistle, but I don't recognize the tune.

Maybe you can take them off and just put a piece of rubber between the brackets and your paint to help stop the vibrations

Can they carry a tune???

Are they missing the end caps? All the running boards I've seen have end caps to keep rain and wind out.

I would check out Tasca and look for replacement end caps (assuming that is the problem) or maybe look at sealing up the inside with spay foam and caulk (out of sight inside the tube).

I highly doubt that the vibrations are due to the mounting to the cab.
And installing rubber under the brackets would not help... the vibrations are not being generated by engine/vehicle dynamics. They are being generated by external forces (water, wind). If anything, rubber might make it worse since the vibrations are being created at the running board.

Yeah, I'm not thinking the noise is coming from the connection points. It's definitely the way the tubes resonate when hit with liquids. IF the tubes had more/stronger supports it could keep it from vibrating a wee little bit. But it's probably just that metal tubes naturally ping and sing when struck. End caps would definitely make a world of difference though

Talking

Don't be so quick to address the issue. Why?

Keeps the giant guinea pigs at bay.

Have we learned NOTHING from South Park about the Peruvian flute bands?

the ones on my 06 sounded like that when water or rocks hit them....took the back caps off and rammed in some closed cell foam until they were full front to back, then put the caps back on.....seemed to help

Take the end caps off and shoot em full of that spray foam insulation. I would think this would quiet their tune. :-)

It's because they're hollow. As stated, I'd do the foam

I wonder if applying Dynamat Extreme to the back side and underneath the running boards (out of sight) would dampen their tune...that's what its for...dampening vibrations,

On my 2011, they are open underneath, not fully enclosed. Water splashes or rock chips hit inside the tube, and make a loud tune. I think any kind of deadener or rubberized material sprayed inside would kill most of the noise. It can be pretty irritating during heavy rain.

The sound is being transmitted into the truck via the mounting points. Adding rubber as an isolator would minimize the sound transmittal and probably stop the noise from being heard inside the cab.
