Got my coyote Mustang engine cover installed

I bought a take off engine cover off of a 2012 mustang gt. I only had to make one small notch at the backside of the cover but it was just the bottom lip of the cover to tuck the coolant lines underneath the cover. I ended up extending the heater hoses and re-routing the vaccum lines...this was really easy, just a little time consuming to figure out how to re-route the cover since i didnt want to be like others ive seen who hacked big sections from the cover, i wanted to leave the outside of the cover completely intact...here is a few pics of the cover installed on my wifes 2012 BLue flame fx2 Screw.

I like the mustang engine cover on the trucks, makes the engine compartment much cleaner looking. BUT...i prefer the look of the engine compartment of my white 2012 Reg cab..this BOSS intake is AWESOME!!

What is holding it in place?

gDMJoe..I plan on the coil covers, i thought about buying the kit from FRPP or american muscle and all the other compaies that ofer the coil covers and intake cover as a kit, but i got too good of a deal to turn down on a take off engine cover, and the guy had the steeda accent trim with it too. I have yet to decide if i want the stock mustang coil covers or if i want the boss covers. Im leaning towards the stock mustang coil covers since the blue of the boss covers are the wrong shade of blue to match te blue flame color on the fx2..if the truck was a different color, id run the boss coil covers...the white truck however is going to get the boss coil covers and the boss intake covers.

JTFX2...the engine cover has ball studs on the underside, you have to buy 4 ruber gromets PN:BR3Z-9P686-A. The grommets are inserted into the big holes in the intake and the ball studs engage the grommets...thats all that holds it down!

JTFX2 03-02-2013 11:19 PM

I love the way it fits perfectly. I've seen some on here that have a gap between the cover and the engine. Looks great, thanks for the part #'s.

They fit just fine, takes some time and thought about how to properly extend and route coolant hoses, and vaccum lines. I used a couple 90degree fittings and ran new coolant hoses from the heatercore to the backside of the motor and ran them just above the fuel rail, so that the cover would clear the hoses and still sit low and not ave coolant hoses running across the valve cover, or out the front of the cover...to give it more of a factory look!

JustA5.0 03-04-2013 05:50 PM

How do you like that boss intake? Thats gonna be my next investment

anthony k 03-05-2013 07:32 PM

Engine covers hold heat in.

I'd rather see the engine cleaned up.

My 08gt I had cam covers powdercoated, cleaned up the factory wiring. Looks much better
Same with 05 Gto.

Ecoboost is going to get the same treatment when the down pipes go on

SUPERSIX 03-06-2013 09:41 PM

well, no option of powder coating the stock valve covers on the coyote motors...the valve covers arent metal...actually if you do the research, they are made from recycled carpet of all things...WTF was ford thinking! the coyote trucks wiring harnesses and heater hoses and vaccum lines are beyond ugly and its not worth cutting and extending the wiring harness just to hide it. the covers actually arent retaining heat. ive got a digital laser thermometer and dont see any difference in operating temps with the cover on.

If you're referring to the coil covers ... Ford Racing Performance Parts offer metal coil covers .....

http://www.gdmjoe.com/gothf150/engin...coilcovers.jpg

Besides that ..... You can/could always paint the plastic coil covers.

the coyote trucks wiring harnesses and heater hoses and vaccum lines are beyond ugly and its not worth cutting and extending the wiring harness just to hide it.
Agree and I'm not defending it, however ..... For 99% of the market share this is just fine. For co$t reasons you have to cater to the majority.

hydro1 03-08-2013 10:02 AM

^^ ooooh, me likey the flat black cover

SUPERSIX 03-09-2013 10:28 AM

gDMJoe..yeah they (FORD) didnt want to spend another 4-5 dollars cleaning up the engine compartment in these trucks because they knew that would drive the final cost on the trucks up even farther, and most dont care for aesthetics in an engine compartment especially in the engine compartment of a vehicle whos design purose was for work. However there are a TON of us who care alot about the aesthetic side of these trucks and their engines, which left us completely cold and dry! but atleast the mustang engine cover and coil covers are an easy swap. I do like the ford racing coil covers, but good god they are high priced! and when i speak of being made from recycled carpet, I mean the actual valve cover (what the coil cover mounts to).

Hydro1....its a really simple job, there are other forum members here who have done the cover install in different routes than I did, no matter what way you do it, it looks 100x better than factory and you can find the stock mustang intake covers on ebay for next to nothing, and there is even a guy who custom paints them on ebay or you can get them from multiple companys in carbon fiber.

gDMJoe....I had been wanting to do the mustang intake cover since i brought the fx2 home, but was actually unsure of it, until I saw yours. Thats when i had to do it! Thanks for your write up that you posted about the install! There was alot of good information in that writeup!

99and04f150 03-10-2013 12:07 PM

Well that's getting added to my list.... LOOKS GREAT GUYS!!! I hate how these engines look from the factory. It is a huge let down especially since aesthetically these trucks are the most pleasing to look and even more so with the new '13 front clips and HID's, but I'm partial.

Koolponycar 03-11-2013 12:09 AM

think i'll have to do this soon, thanks guys

SUPERSIX 03-12-2013 06:23 PM

DO IT!!!! but....be sure to come back on here after you do it, and post pics for others to see the different routes people went to do the install...im still trying to find mustang take off coil covers...may just end up buying 2 sets of boss covers when i order the boss covers for the white truck...im just not sure about the blue of the boss coil covers on the blue truck since blue flame is nowhere close to the blue of the boss coil covers...

gDMJoe 03-12-2013 08:57 PM

Etal ...

There's currently (and has been for a quite a while) an eBay listing for new, take-off Mustang 5.0L coil covers (grey) -AND- engine cover for $80 *free* shipping. The seller is roushperformance

SUPERSIX 03-13-2013 07:10 PM

I just ordered this one gDMjoe, thanks. Supersix as far as the coil covers go I could not find any seperate cheap so the roush takeoff is a deal. I have noticed in the pics of Roush website they show what I think is a shot of a cover for an automatic, which has a second cutout on the right side. But I think what you get is for a manual, because all roush coversions Ive seen are all ways a manual in a mustang, just makes since. But you all made it work so i can too, thanks. Also to note, the ball studs for the coil covers Part # 2L1Z-6N958-AA on tasca e-bays site have 6x2x9 on a pic of the pack they come in. So my guess is that that means M6x 2.00"x9mm? I am going to try to find something similar too rather than paying $12 x 6 for those :shark:

Thanks, I will post pics whenever I get done, but that will be a while as I do not have a CAI. Unless I modify my intake tube like someone else done. I am still waiting on mine to come in.

Ball studs

Hey fellas,
Yes you can get the ball studs from Roushperformance for about $1.50 a piece but you have to pay a minimum ups fee of 6.50. So I ordered 6 studs like they use for the Roush covers for a total of $15.50 shipped to my door. Here is a link to what they look like http://dealers.roushperformance.com/...242_manual.pdf
I told Brian there he would probably get some more orders coming.
O, my engine and coil covers came in today, but it will be about 4 or 5 days before I try to work on this. Will post if I get anything done with pics.

That is what I am going to attempt when I get time. I was thinking maybe extend the tube back at the throttle body, and would like to remove that big ugly plastic resonator box and cap the 2 lines to it. I wonder if it is for sound improvement or flow? If you come up with something let us know and I'll do the same.

Z7What 03-20-2013 09:47 AM

Im going to play with mine today also. Should be in by the time i get home today from work. My goal is to not cut or modifiy the intake cover at all. If anything needs to be changed i will change the intake itself. But honestly id rather make my own piping and keep the factory airbox.

We shall see....

I feel the same way, I do not want to cut up the cover either. I am having to work long hours the next 4 days,so it will be the weekend before I can experiment with it. Keep us posted, thanks.

Your welcome, mine should come in this weekend and then I can take a better look at it.

The covers came into and I wasted no time installing the coil covers. They look awesome the intake cover is going to take some work to get it how I want it. I was just curious if anybody has pictures or what heater lines and vacuum lines they cut and modded so I can get an idea.

No he has a AFE on it, unless your talking about the one he took off.

03Screwon22's 03-21-2013 11:39 PM

What's the best way to take off the vacum lines?

SUPERSIX 03-22-2013 06:35 PM

i have an AFE coldair...but i still have the factory intae plumbing if thats what you are aksing. to take off the vaccum line, give it a slight pull, they come rt off...sometimes once they get old, they tend to stick, so ill pull and twist..lol..or...put a flat head at the base of the hose and use the screw driver to help lift the vaccum hos off the fitting.

03Screwon22's 03-22-2013 09:40 PM

I was referring to the vacum lines where I can placed the coil covers.

derekmj64 03-23-2013 09:40 AM

Nice I am trying to get my buddy to do the same to his 5.0!

SUPERSIX 03-23-2013 10:11 AM

03Screwon24s..if you are referring to the pcv lines ie the hard plastic lines from the valve cover to the intake, they have a little grey plastic lock, just push the plastic lock and the line will slide right off. otherwise, post a pic of what lines you are referring to!

03Screwon22's 03-23-2013 02:52 PM

Thanks supersix

03Screwon22's 03-26-2013 08:39 PM

Will you send me a step by step instruction for installation for both
