Truck quit runnuing

2010-F150-4.6
On vacation in Canada going up a hill and felt like running out of gas, then it just quit.
Towed 40 miles to A&B Ford in Perth Ontario.
Great dealer took me right in. An hour later truck is ready to go.
Problem--Found dirt in mass air flow sensor.
Fix--Cleaned out dirt.
Hard to believe some thing like that could happen, no warning at all, was running fine and just quit.

Resistance

The functionality of the MAF is determined in part by resistance measured from the device by the vehicles ECU or PCM (i forget which). Significant fouling or oiling of the element in the MAF will cause this issue of poor performance or simply not running at all. TruckGuy24 raises a good question, what kind of filter are you running? Did you recently replace the filter and not close the airbox? Have you modified the airbox in any way? Bottom line is this, how did the MAF get dirty enough to cause this issue?

Thanks--No engine mods
New stock air filter and service (oil change) at dealer before trip.
40,000 miles on truck--out of warranty
