New FX4 Paint Flaws
New FX4 Paint Flaws
I picked up a new Race Red FX4 SCrew on Monday and while washing it yesterday I found a bunch of paint flaws. There are pieces of dirt in the paint all over the roof, paint missing around the taillights, dirt in the paint on the rear, and places on the drivers side and around the tailgate where there isn't any paint.

The closest Ford dealer to me has a horrible paint shop. I'm going to have to do some research on the local dealers paint shops. I really don't want a brand new truck to be repainted. It pisses me off that I spent that much money on a truck and the paint is messed up.
It surprises me that when they prep the truck for delivery they didnt see it. Yeah if they have a crappy body shop I would avoid it to. And im not sure pissed off would be a strong enough word for a screwed up paint job on a brand new truck. And you might be right about having it repainted if there is enough area that blending in isnt an option. Good luck with getting it fixed. I had a tailgate alignment issue with my truck when I got it and they said it was due to the line X so I informed them that they did the line X so they needed to do the adjustment. Was a fight and like you we spent how much on our trucks and all we want is for them to be perfect when we get them.
When I took delivery the clean up job wasn't that great. There was stuff on the headliner and the truck was dirty, but I was driving 300 miles so it didn't bother me much. The salesman did say the detail guys suck, but that they aren't crooks like some they get. I'm going to call the salesman tomorrow morning and talk to him about it. He's out of state, but may be able to help me out somehow.
I think I'd be back to the dealer in a heartbeat. The missing paint around the taillights looks to me like it was masked and repainted after it left the factory. Good possiblility that all or part of that truck was repainted some where.
I ordered a new one in 96 and about 2 weeks after I got it, I noticed some wrinkles in the paint on the front fender. Took it to body shop and was told that the fender had been damaged and was repaired with putty/paint some time between factory and dealer. The body putty had shrunk causing the wrinkles. If repair is under a certain amount the trucking company wasn't required to report it!? I was pissed!
After fighting with Ford for a while they agreed to replace the fender and repaint it.

I must put too many miles on my trucks. I wouldn't let a paint shop touch my truck for those types of little issues, because the solution is too likely to be worse than the original issues. Plus door dings and scratches are part of my ownership of a truck.
My coworker has a disaster story: Had similar paint imperfections. Took it to shop for repaint, the technician had a screwdriver in his back pocket. Tore a hole in leather seat. While replacing seat, gashed the plastic on the drivers door. While replacing the plastic, guess what? They scratched the paint on the door edge. Start the process over again!
Every new truck I've seen has paint imperfections. I've seen too many paint shop 'repaints' where the colors don't match 100%, or the paint is on too thick/thin. Too much of a risk of replacing one defect with another. Unless you fix it yourself, so you KNOW it is 100% right, you are risking making it worse.
Learning to love a truck with its imperfections makes you a better person in society. I know, I've done the Google research!

If the damage isn't that bad, they aren't required to report it to anyone.
They just repair the unit and sell it as new.
There has been lots of hail damage to new vehicles, lately. And lots of water damage to new vehicles, also. Most will be repaired and sold as new.
That paint doesn't sound or look like factory paint,(especially on the internet) altho there has been lots of members complaining the bottoms of their doors were primed, only.
I'd start looking under it and all around the engine compartment looking for overspray, but since you've already taken delivery it might just end up making you feel worse.
Good luck
I had the same issue on the roof of my truck. The paint was bubbled and those bubbles opened up the first time I washed it. I brought it to the dealership and they ended up repainting the entire roof under warranty. They did a really good job...can't even tell there was a problem.
I would definitely take it to the dealer.

Unfortunately in all of my experience almost all Ford body shops have horrible body shops. If you are not happy about this I would probably see what they say but I have a feeling they are going to tell you 'Sorry about your luck.' If it were me, I've got an amazing body shop, I would just take it there and bite my tongue to get it fixed on my own dime to know it was done right. I know it's not what you would want to hear of course but maybe you can get the dealer to contribute towards getting it fixed.
It's funny my dealer has a overhang where they pull your new car / truck around. It's huge. No light gets under it. I've always thought they probably did it because when people check out their new vehicle they won't see much in the dark. I told them to pull my truck out into the parking lot so I could check it.

I've got a 6" scratch on the driver's side of my bed, near the wheel well. It ends in a paint chip, but no dent.
I noticed at the time of delivery (before I signed anything), and told them I'd buy the truck if they fixed the scratch. I brought it back a few days later and the dealer wanted to keep it for a few days to repaint the bed side. I told them it's not that bad, just use touch-up paint on the chip, and I'd be happy.
I've had my truck 9 months, and no sign of anything rusting there. It really doesn't bother me.
I had a 2009 Lincoln MKS that had all SORTS of paint flaws in it, and all looked to be from the factory. Every time I washed it I found new flaws. I know I'd rather have factory paint on my vehicle than paint shop paint, for the same reasons other people have mentioned.
In your case, however, I think a complete respray is warranted.
Good luck!

I had a couple of spots on my truck that I noticed the first time I washed it. So, I took it back to the dealer and told them about it.
At first, they were headed down the ol' 'you took delivery of the truck as-is' road, but I quickly let them know that there is no way a person can inspect every inch of a vehicle while trying to work numbers, test drive, etc. They agreed and took care of the spots.

Some of those are clearly flaws in the painting process. A few of the others are pretty clearly damage after the paint was applied. Unfortunately, since you already signed for the truck, all of them are yours. The dealer will not replace your truck - only repair it. That's why I go over every new vehicle with a fine tooth comb before I sign on the dotted line. I'm buying a new truck - not a freshly repaired new one.
Now you have a big decision to make. Do you repair all of the problem areas or leave some of them alone? A good paint shop - not normally found at a dealership - can do wonders and nobody will ever know there was repair work done. Even the best cannot absolutely guarantee that the work they do will meet all factory specifications though. And even the best sometimes miss on color match. If you get a lousy paint shop working on it, I guarantee that you'll actually decrease the value of the truck because the repairs will be visible.
