F150 Ecoboost Steering Is Flawed.
Picked up my 2012 f150 super crew 4x2 with the ecoboost engine about two weeks ago and have been back to the dealership already for the popping sensation that periodically happens I the steering wheel. It's a very irritating sensation, it reminds me of my older silverado I had (mid 2000 model) that had an issue with the intermediate steering shaft, but not as severe. I'm in the stage of getting the issue to be reproduced by the dealership.
It definitely feels like there is some slop somewhere in the steering or suspension. Sometimes the popping shows up in the accelerator pedal at the same time when it transmits through the steering wheel.
My f150 was mf'd in Dec 2011 at the Dearborn plant.

Wipers are not engaged when this popping/knocking feeling show up. Its actually beginning to make a noise now too at times when the popping shows up. Sounds a little like a rattle.
Everything else with the truck has been great.
It certainly feels like slop somewhere in the steering/rack/front suspension.
Dealer thought the tires where overinflated so they let some air out. Didn't help of course. Air pressure is now 29psi cold, door sticker says it should be 35psi cold, where I had it. I think the technician checked the air pressure after driving the truck around, trying to reproduce the problem. So far they say they can't reproduce, which just blows me away. Its very obvious and happens on most road surfaces. I'll have to get some time away from work and ride with a technician to point it out. I have had trucks of all makes before this one including an suv and a car with electronic steering, none of them behaved like this one does.
This truck is only a few weeks old and I'm already thinking about what to do if this can't be fixed. Either the popping is the nature of this beast or the dealer simply doesn't want to acknowledge the problem because there doesn't appear to be a fix. Many google searches has uncovered what seems to be hundreds of other customers with this same problem and have had no resolution.
Try this... My 2011 has a similar issue. I make the popping go away for weeks at a time. with the truck running and parked... turn the wheel from lock to lock and really jam it in to both locks. I did this in frustration after my dealer blew me off.... but it worked. something is lose in the torque demand sensor and this tightens it up.
F 150 2011 Electronic Power Assisted steering safety problems
Steering became hard and sticky at a certain point and progressively all around. This started probably around 20,000 miles. Truck had 35,000 miles when sticking and hardened became all around. It was taken to dealer right away. It also has the popping sound described in this forum.
Perhaps this truck has the most mileage’s in this forum and that is the reason this complain should be address as a priority.
Dealer replaced EPAS stating that it was necessary since it was not safe to drive around with an EPAS that could lock any minute. If I did not change the EPAS the dealer wanted me to sign a release agreement for any possible accident.
Dealer stated that the problem had three possible causes:
1.- Driving with low pressure tires
2.-A hard hit.
3.- Over steering to one side.
Dealer is in Guayaquil, Ecuador and wants to charge me USD 3,000 for the new EPAS included labor.
I do not agree with dealer’s position and I am petition a resolution form Ford USA.
To me my truck with 35,000 miles is a reference of safety issues that need to be urgently address by Ford.
