RWD gas mileage? Looking to get a new work truck.
My old work truck was a 2005 F150 XL and I put 120k trouble free miles on it before I sold it. I literally changed the oil, and replaced the tires and brakes once in that time and it never skipped a beat. I'm looking to get another one now and I was wondering what kind of mileage you RWD guys were getting out of your trucks. I've heard/read good things about the 5.0 but I haven't had a chance to drive a truck with any of the new engines. I really like the EcoBoost but I don't know if it's worth the premium or not in this case. I'm also interested to hear if the new V6 has any guts to it since my old one was a dog and got the same mileage as my buddy's truck that had a 4.6 in it. Any input is appreciated!
If you don't want to spend the money on a EB, then the 5.0L will do just fine. It will flat out put your other truck to shame (performance). The fuel mileage may be slightly better , but no exceptional difference. The EB is a FUN motor and will shame almost any truck out there, but likes fuel if you're aggresive with the skinny pedal. It will only pay off if you do long distance drives and stay away from stop & go.

I think that your driving habits are going to play the biggest part in what kind of mpg you get, especially with these new Ford engines.
I think that a RWD with the 5.0 or the EB can easily see averages in the 20+ range, driving very conservatively. I'd guess that a RWD with the 3.7 could see averages in the 23+ range, driving very conservatively. If you drive like most people, I would expect 17, maybe 19 averages with the 5.0 or EB and 18 to 20 with the 3.7.
My guesses are based on information that I've seen here as well as my own experience.

I read that one too Bluejay, mostly 4x4's with 3.55 or 3.73 rear ends. It sounds like the 5.0 is the best compromise. I'll just get the highest rear end available since I don't haul more than a ladder and a tool box with a very rare small trailer...
Mine is a 4x2 Screw with 3.55s and the truck has averaged 19.5 for 26,000 miles. I usually average 20.5 to 21 on a tank that is mostly highway and get about 17.5 around town.

I am running 93 octane, E10 Shell which I purchase at 87 octane price on Monday's at my local Shell station. The last tank I averaged 19.104 mpg in combined (60 hwy/40 city) driving. This calculation was using basic math, the avg. comp. showed 19.4 avg mpg.
I have received a best of 20.1 mpg on the highway at 70 mph with the cruise set.
