LIke I said if you or anybody thinks that some custom tune on a truck is worth it go for it, but its not always the answer and there could be unwarranted side effects. If you are reffering to the 5.0 in the mustang being built to handle 150hp while that might be true, that engine is not entirely the same as what is in truck, FYI. And anybody knows that maxing out an engine by slapping a blower on it will in the long run end its life a lot sooner than one that didnt have one.
I percieve that what he was talking about is the hundreds of us on this site that used tuners to make our 5.4s perform as they should have from the factory but didn't. A Gryphon or SCT hardware addition for something in the neighborhood of $350 to $500 outlay enabled us to add 25 to 30 hp, more torque, and MUCH better transmission performance. Had I not been able to perform this magic with the tunes, I probably would not have kept my 2005 5.4 as long as I did.

so what you are saying is your "cheap" tunes did something good?

that just can't be true, Dr. Nards said so.

Never said it wouldnt do anything. assuming you gain 25hp 5-10hp of that could be do to anything. Like I said before it may be worth it for you and others, but one must know of the consequences and what they are really doing. Good luck with whatever you add.

because you brought them up about the mustangs gaining 150 hp.

Does all the dribble you spew just exit your brain after you post it.

There are no "ill affects" to running an aftermarket tune if it is written well. That is why tuners allow you to datalog to check everything.

Every thread turns into a tuner thread, some just quicker than others.

Nards have you driven a custom tuned 6speed ford tranny? If not try it out and let us know how much better it is than the sloppy Ford tune.

Depending on octane you make a lot more than 10 hp. Some dyno's are showing 30-40+ HP and 40-60lb ft tq AT THE WHEELS. Trust me you will feel this.

I think I read somewhere that Ford does not allow the 5.0 in the F150 to put down 100% power until 4500 RPM. The tuners unlock the power so you can get at it right off idle. Makes for a dramatic change in the driveability. The 2011+ 6 speed is improved over the 09-10 but IMO is still sloppy compared to one that is tuned.

I came very close to trading my 2009 5.4 for a 5.0 this past Christmas but once I got it tuned I kept it...don't get me wrong I do like the 5.0 more than my 5.4 but financially, for me, it made more sense to keep my current ride.

Sorry to the OP for opening this can of worms but it is something to consider, and IMO is a cheap "fix". Your transmission woes will most likely be fixed to your liking. If I remember correctly 5star will refund your money if you don't like tunes. I can't speak for the other tuners.

In the end it's your truck and the posters here are just giving suggestions.

Good luck in your decision.

I have the same problem except I was on the highway the other day and floored it to go around another car. The truck was totally confused and hung out in neutral for a while and then decided to shift. It dropped into gear with such force it chirped the tires. I'm with you, the transmission is getting on my nerves.
