Question Has anyone traded in their 4.6 V8 for a 3.7 V6 4WD?

With gas a $4 a gallon, I am seriously considering a 3.7 V6 4WD F150. I am curious on opinions from people who have traded in their 4.6 V8 4WD for a 3.7 V6 4WD.

Thank you all in advance!

Chances are, if you are just trading it in to save $$$ on gas, it will take many years to save as much money on gas as you would lose on a hit for a trade-in. That doesn't count the interest on a loan if you do get a loan.

Now, if you just want a new truck, that's a different story.

Not sure a 3.7 will get that much better than the 4.6, anyway.

or any f150 for that matter.

I get much better city in my 5.0 than my 4.6 or 5.4, but on the highway w/ the same driving habits i get roughly the same MPG as any other f150 i have had.

If you want MPG get a car.

I don't have a truck at this time. My father-in-law has a 4.6 SuperCab F150. I am just seeing if it would be better to buy a new 3.7 V6 or a used certified 4.6 V8.

Cost wise, a 4.6 will be cheaper up front. I'd make your decision more based of needs and wants over motor. Both will be great.

Any reason for not wanting a 5.0, 5.4, or ecoboost? mileage won't be any worse than the 4.6 or 3.7 and get some extra power

As long as you stay in the cheaper trim lines and cabs smaller than a Supercrew you can get a 3.7L in a 4X4. Anything bigger or fancier (than XLT Supercab) and the 5.0 is included with 4X4.

I don't plan on doing any towing, just need something haul items in the bed occasionally. Also I need 4WD to get to work in the snow.

Have you considered a smaller truck? If you are after MPG that is the route i'd go if you don't need the size of a 1/2 ton.

The tacoma is a pretty nice truck, if i didn't need a 1/2 ton i'd have one instead of my f150.

The cabs of those smaller trucks feel cramped for me. Thanks for the thought!

If you're driving a full size truck to work every day $4.00gal is going to be a lot in either truck. If you only have to move things on occasion you might want to seriously consider a 4 cylinder 4X4 pick up. In that you'll probably see 25mpg.

cheef kindly posted a link to the thread that I started when I bought my 2011 F150 3.7, 4X4. There is a fair amount of information in that thread, especially about fuel economy, as it's been a concern of mine as well. I explain what kind of fuel economy I was able to achieve under varying conditions. I did average 20mpg for my first year of ownership. Several others give their experiances as well. I'm not sure that a 4.6 would do quite as good under the identical conditions. I do believe that a 4.6 could do the same, with a lighter right foot.

There isn't going to be huge differences in fuel economy, or for the price of the truck. You might get more truck for your money if you go for something a couple years old, that would have the quite capable 4.6.

Good luck!

I had a 09 xlt supercrew with the 4.6 and the 3.15 rear end, and on my daily commute to work I would average 18mpg, which was mostly highway...about 40 miles one way. I now have a 2012 xlt supercrew with the 3.7 and 3.73 rear end and on the same exact commute I'm averaging 22.9 mpg. Both were 2wd. This is hand calculated, not going by the mpg read out on the truck.
