Choosing my first truck - Looking for some help

Hi everyone, this is my first post here, but I've been reading non stop the posts on this site and have to say i'm looking forward to owning my first truck.

As I don't know much about them, I'm hoping to get some opinions here on a few things;

a) am i getting a good deal
b) opinion on which truck should I get

I'm looking at two 2012 FX4's. I have to pull the trigger on Jan 31st as that's the last day for the large discounts - $7500 off plus what the dealer gives me (at least that's what i'm told). Keep in mind i'm in Canada (Toronto), so these prices are canadian

I've opted to buy something off the lot instead of ordering as my current lease is up in 3 weeks, the only option missing which i would have liked is a sunroof, but then again, it's not a big deal if I don't have one

Here are my choices;

Truck 1-
2012 FX4 - 5.0L V8, FX Luxury Package, Tailgate step, Trailer Brake controller, Rearview camera, Leather seats
Price - $38,600 before the Costco discount

Truck 2 -
2012 FX4 - Ecoboost, FX Luxury Package, Tailgate step, Trailer Brake controller, Rearview cam, Bed extender, Remote Start, Navigation, FX Appearance package (to which i've asked them to remove all the decals, I'll probably swap the black rims to silver ones myself, other than that, this is the only option I don't care much about)
Price - $ 44,750 before the Costco discount

I won't be towing much, other than hauling a car back from the US maybe once a year, but i'll probably be using my truck bed a lot to haul stuff around. My job is about 45 min from home, all hwy so that will be my commute.

I've driven both of them and like them both. The Ecoboost was noticeably easier on acceleration, but didn't have the nice tone of the V8

That said, I'll probably keep this truck for a while so I want to make sure i don't regret my purchase and find myself trading it in next year

Any input would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

if you got the cash for the extra 6k go for it, otherwise truck number on 1. Myself can not justify a 44k truck with all that crap in it. as long as it has 4x4, power everything, a radio Im good

I initially walked in buying a $29,000 truck to tow a car trailer that i'll use once a year, maybe twice to haul a car back from the US. Then got sold on the leather when i remembered how neat my 2 and 5 yr old are in the back seat.....

Don't really care about the nav, or especially the appearance package. But i was leaning towards an Ecoboost w/leather

I guess I'm worried I'll kick myself for not getting the Ecoboost engine, if it wasn't for that truck number 1 was my choice

When I bought my '10, I got a better deal on a factory order than I could on any truck on the lot. You should expect to walk out of the dealer at least 15 grand under sticker with the rebates offered.

Are these "rebates" a regular things, they have the $7500-$9500 from Ford, plus dealer discounts, I keep getting told this is a rare occurrence

Right now, based on what they showed me the white one had a discount of almost 15k (i forgot to ad in my original post the truck also had a tri-fold tonneau cover, 3M and tint in the price)

The black one is about 14k off

Who knows what, if any incentive will be offered after this one expires.
Could be extended and could change to 0%.
I didn't want to take the chance of loosing out and ordered mine.

With the 2 choices you given, I'd go with #1. Reason is the 5L.
Although the EB may pull harder, the 5L is no slouch by any means and i can do without the complexity of the EB.

Me too! I am totally satisfied with my 5.0 and the mpg is exceeding what most of the EB guys are reporting. There are a few that are slightly more in mpg, but not many. Love the sound of that little 5.0 when I get on it.

That was my thinking when I ordered my truck. Test-drove both, loved the low-end torque of the EB, but the (relative) simplicity of the 5.0, lower price and awesome sound sold me on it. Not to mention I watched the MPGs for both on the dash screens and the 5.0 beat the EB in the spirited city/country driving I was doing. The only way I could actually get the EB to beat the 5.0 was light throttle cruising on flat roads. Keep in mind these were both brand new trucks with <50 miles on them.

I dropped by the dealer tonight, showed the sales manager this thread ,told them i was leaning towards truck number 1 and they've knocked down truck number two by another $1500.00 before the 1k Costco discount
I got the usual story that this is at their cost blah blah .....I told them I'd let them know by end of week

If I take in consideration it comes with the tonneau cover, 3m and tint I'm getting closer to the 5L price

Problem now is i'm leaning towards the 5L (having flashbacks of my fathers 5L mustang growing up and the fun i had with it LOL)

Negotiate 1500$ off the 5L truck. Be ready to walk out the door and follow through with it. They'll call....
If You're not A/X/Z plan, there is enough fat to go around the table

Go with the Boost

I was torn with the same decision last week only in the XLT 4x4 Scab trim.
Went with the Ecoboost after test driving them both.
Time will tell on durability but I like the 3.5 better evertime I get in.
E locker happened to be on the Eco truck and that tipped scales for me.

Be different or go big=6.2

I'd go with truck 1. Ford engines have proven themselves in many ways including reliability. EcoBoost is a relatively new thing for Ford and knowing that the engine comes from a company with a history of reliability is a good thing but i still would want to hold off on the EB. Up front it looks great but Time will tell if the thing will really last.
