Chrome running board scratch repair?

I was parking the truck in the underground at work and just brush up against a concrete column with the outside edge of the running board. Some of the chrome was removed and I know it will eventually rust there. Any simple, inexpensive repairs I can try to keep it from corroding?

Whoops, that hurts, sorry to hear that.

But, if you have the chrome OEM running boards I am thinking about, there will be no rust as they are aluminum. Strong and sturdy, but aluminum. Thanks.

jw,
It's a '10 FX4 with the OEM running boads (2 separate black step pads with "FORD" embosed in each). Is this aluminium?

glc,
Brush on chrome, I didn't even think there was such a product, man I'm out to luch. I'm going to order this just to see what what it looks like. Thanks for the direct link.

Formula, given any thought to take this opportunity to Paint to match those puppies to the truck now? I'm gonna do mine in the near future. I think it will look way better, especially on a FX4. If your truck had chrome bumpers, it might be a different story.

Actually I have the chrome 6 bar front grill on my FX4 so it looks ok to me with the chrome boards. However I would love to swap them for the OEM 6" black boards.

Clean the scratch really good, make sure no rust. Sand the spot smoother and smoother 320-400-600-1000-1500 ... and then polish it after you finish with the 1500 grit.

Then clean with laquer thinner.

Then get a bottle of CLEAR touch up paint and brush it on if bare steel. I've polished small steel parts until they look like chrome and coated with clear enamel and have a couple of small pieces on a motorcycle I never got chromed after modding that have seen many miles in rain and as long as sealed with clear, they maintain their shine. Like the bolt of my rifle trhat's bare steel with a polished look, I keep it oiled and protected from moisture and it looks like chrome.

You can also clear coat if aluminum, but if you don't CC the aluminum you can polish it when you wax the truck easier.
