5.0 vs. Ecoboost Pros and Cons
Really? Exactly WHAT extra maintenance?
I've owned several turbocharged cars in the past including my current car that has 250,000 miles on the original turbo motor.
I've never had to do any kind of extra maintenance to those cars because of turbocharging.
OK, assuming the turbo gets 10% better fuel economy and you burn 26 gallons a week* at $3.50/gal gasoline, your break-even point is at about 74 weeks, or 17 months.
Not bad, and as fuel costs rise, that number will get smaller.
*I'm going through about 26 gallons each week driving it on my daily commute.

I drove the 5.0 and like it ok. It was not any better than my 5.4 with a custom tune, but it should get a lot better mpg. The $750 I will save getting the 5.0 will buy a lot of gas at 1 to 2 mpg.
Not bad, and as fuel costs rise, that number will get smaller.

I like that plan! I just can't get excited about buying a new truck. I still don't like the looks of the new ones as much as I like mine. My wife is pushing me to do so as we are on the road a lot late at night and there is 132,000 on my odemeter. It still runs great and I love the truck, but it makes her nervous. I keep telling her that a brand new one can quit on you, while my 05 has proven itself.

i think the point with 5.0 owners saying more things to go wrong is it's a newer motor that hasn't proven itself yet. if it does so great, but a lot don't want to risk it. i know i didn't as they are more expensive to repair and not as easy to work on.
apparently every one with an ecoboost is an expert now, not directed at you gt40.

Turbos don't require any extra maintenance, that's a myth.
Boils down to what you want. Honestly the mileage difference between the two seems to be negligible. Heck my 05 5.4 with over 100,000 miles on it still averages 17.5 to 18 MPG.

Im averaging 17-18 mpg combined driving in my '11 5.0 FX4 Screw in 100+ temps. I love the sound of it too. Im narrowminded in the fact I think a fullsize truck should have a v8. To each their own, but I love my 5.0. Now if I could just get the air conditioner to keep up with the temps. 109 degrees today in OKC.
Econboost has better torque don low and KILLS the 5.o in towing and unloaded mpg.
5.0 keeps the OLD v8 sound and technology.
So question is who are YOU? OLD technolgoy or New technology.
I was always the latter and made the jump to the new. I will crush any 5.0 unloaded, with a load or with mpg. I have 60K miles to work out any bugs before I am on my own.... Till then any 5.0 folkd need mods to catch me on mpg or on Acceleration. WAY behind me......
The rest you hear id folks trying to justify theior purchase. 5.o is still a great motor and beats the 5.4. So i dont want to ssay the 5.0 is not good... it IS.
We are reallt talkjing better or evenb bettern, depending on what you are doing. I tow a 5500lb boat and get 14.5 towing. And it pull slike a diesel. Lets see a 5.0 do that? It cannot. but it is still a great engine and kills the 5.4 (which I had an 01' and an 05').

Mileage between the two is not negligible in my experience. Went from 05 to 11 both SuperCrew FX4s and both with 33" aftermarket/oversized tires. Smaller 26 gallon tank in the 11 and my range is minimum 50 miles better and often closer to 100. I usually got 14-14.5 on my 05 and routinely get 16.5-17 with the ecoboost plus more power than the 05. Cruising at 60 on a long trip will yield near 19mpg and I'm sure closer to 20 with OEM wheels/tires. It's a great upgrade for sure! Only thing I'm not elated about is the slight lag from dead stop, what you don't want when u need to cross or merge into a busy road.

I drove both, and went with the 5.0. The compared differences are to close to worry about. Who follows the towing guidelines to the T anyways? either truck will do almost anything you need before you need a bigger truck. For me, I couldnt get past the thought of my 40k F-150 sounding like my 16 year old neighbors rice burner civic. I went with pure american V-8 rumbling heritage. To each is own, and im happy. good luck in your choice.

Both the Coyote 5.0 and the EcoBoost 3.5 are about the same age (t.5 Coyote 5.0 made its debut in the 2011 Mustang. The 3.5L Ecoboost made its debut in the 2010 Lincoln MKS and the 2010 Taurus SHO*.
So if you want to go with the older, more mature engine design that's been in use longer, you want the Ecoboost 3.5L, NOT the newer 5.0!
*OK -- those were FWD designs. The 3.5L in the F150 is slightly different to accomodate a longitudinal RWD installation, and gets a different tune for more low-RPM torque..

This engine didn't just pop into my consciousness when I started shopping for a truck. I'd been waiting a few years for Ford to put one in an F150. Even back in '08 folks in the industry were saying this would be the perfect engine for a truck.
