What's The Consensus On The EcoBoost?
What is the story. Is it time for us 5.4 boys look at this engine?
[1] Do you own one? What do you think?
[2] What have you read?
[3] With all things equal, would you trade your 5.4 to get the EcoBoost?
[4] Do you think the EcoBoost will stand the test of time?

I haven't had a 5.4l. My eco-boost pulls like my Charger with the 3.5l. I think that is pretty good since I have the weak **** highway gears. The MPG isn't great, but I'm getting about 17.5 with only a couple hundred miles on the odo. I think that will go up once the engine is broke in and I start picking my kid up from school. As it is now, I drive about three miles county rural then get into the city driving. When I start picking the kid up I'll be driving about 15 miles or so in rural highway before getting into city driving.
I traded my 08 5.4 in on a 10 5.4 and got $6000.00 in rebates. They didn't have any rebates at the time of the trade for the 3.5 and iI would've had to order one. The 10 with the 6sp is way nicer than the 08 with the 4sp and with the $6000.00 in rebates that off sets the mpg difference. As far as power, yes the EB is better, but for the average guy driving to work or towing average size TT's 2-3000 miles a year the 5.4 gets it done. Only thing I wish for is the Select Shift 2011 tranny.
Like others said not the mileage I was getting in the test vehicle but still better then my 5.4 so I wont complain. A little lazy off the line but once the turbos spool hang on. On the test drive I got 18 city 24 highway, and in my Platinum with 20" wheels getting 17 city and 18.1 highway but it only has 3K miles on it. I don't think it will loosen till about 5K.
Would buy it again in a second, but the 5.0 seems to get similar milege, can get the 36 gallon tank, has that V8 sound we all love.

2.) I've read that I'm not alone in being somewhat disappointed with the real world fuel milage of the ecoboost. Again, I'm not seeing much difference from my 5.4L mileage-wise in the city. It'll go up some once i get some more miles on it though.
3.)Yes, and I did
4.) I think the ecoboost will prove to be a durable engine. I've seen ecoboost lincolns with 50,000+ miles on them already with zero problems. Now, other than displacement, the f150 engine is different than the 3.5L engine utilized in the MKS, MKT, Flex, ect. in almost every way, so only time will tell if the 150 ecoboost is just as reliable as its counter partner. I trade vehicles every 2-3 years, so this is less of an issue for me, but for those who drive their trucks 200+k miles into the ground, I'll just say this... Everything eventually wears out. I think the ecoboost will hold up as well as the 5.4L, however, when it comes for repairs, it's going to be ALOT more expensive to fix... The complete engine assembly for the ecoboost is $15,788 from FMC...the 5.0L is $8,800, and the 6.2L is $6,674.
Hope that helps

Not very many miles on mine yet, but with the 3:73 gears, it has the power to pull down a house. MPG right now it's averaging around 15, so I hope that improves with miles and break in. Only time will tell about the long term durability, but I went with the Ecoboost because of the information I read on it, and my instincts told me it would be a good choice.
I've never personally owned a 5.4, but have driven a few, and there is an obvious difference in low end power/feel between those 5.4s I've driven and the EB, in favor of the EB.

1. 1500 miles on mine. Still getting used to the slight lag starting from a stop, I don't know if it's the turbos or I'm just used to my 2002 with no drive by wire. Also the time it takes to downshift and take off when passing is longer than I'm used to. Having said that, very slight peddle pressure will get you accelerating very quickly, and the thing just keeps pulling after every gear shift. I'm averaging 16 city stop and go, and 19 highway, with a high of 21.5.
2. I've read good and bad.
3. Definitely. My 2002 5.4 with 3.55's was a dog, especially up here at 5200ft. The eco has so much more power, accelerates effortlessly.
4. I hope so, but to early to tell. I agonized over this when choosing between the 5.0 and eco, and ultimately chose eco. Did I make the right decision? Only time will tell.

I have a 2010 crew 4X4 with a 5.4 and 3.55 rear axle. The best I've ever done mileage-wise is a little over 16mpg and the transmission seems to be programmed more for mileage than performance, even in tow/haul mode. It always feels as though the transmission is in too high a gear and the only way it will downshift is to press down harder on the throttle than you do with the ecoboost trucks. I have driven several ecoboost F-150s where I work (approx 50/50 highway/city) and, I feel that this engine and the transmission are ideally matched for the way I drive. The transmission never feels like it is in the wrong gear. Running on premium, the on-board computer shows 21+ mpg which when hand-calculated comes out slightly over 20 mpg. These trucks will run circles around my 5.4, but since my truck is so new, I will have to hang on to it for three or four more years before I can even consider replacing it. If I could trade it in right now and not lose a cent, there is no question in my mind that I would replace it with an ecoboost F-150. Even if the mileage (on regular) were no better than my current truck, the responsiveness would seal the deal for me.
I traded in my 2005 5.4 on an ecoboost and so far so good. With the instant mileage in front of me I find myself driving pretty easy just because I'm more aware of the impact on mileage. That being the case, on weekends I'm driving single lane highway posted 55 (driving about 60) for 150 miles with about 6 towns to slow down for and only a few stops. I average right around 19mpg. I drive about 15-20 miles of freeway to and from work running 70-75 and see a lower mileage around 17mpg. The truck itself is so much better and more snappy that its a huge improvement. I really only checked my mileage on the 2005 doing the round trip to the cabin at 60mph and got 14-14.5mpg regularly. So its better and stronger! I did have oversized tires (305/55R20 Terra Grapplers) on the 2005 but with the larger tires my odo was actually calibrated perfectly with gps. So the stock mileage would have read inaccurately high by a few percentage points. I won't be keeping the stock tires on my ecoboost so I'm anxious to see what that does for my mileage. All said, I'd do it again just for the power even if the mileage isn't improved but better mileage is a definite bonus with prices as high as they are!

Side note: I did buy truck on d-plan. If you want, shoot me some specs and I'll tell what i think it's worth. your VIN would be even better, because I'll just pull the window sticker and know exactly whats on it.
Thanks! But I'll keep my 5.4 since its just about paid for! No ecoboost is capble of this!
