Under the drivers side next to the transfer case. It appears there are fuel lines coming out from it although I have not looked closely.

Possibly a cover for the fuel filter?

 

Thought I read on here someplace that the fuel filter is now a lifetime filter and it part of the fuel pump assembly in the tank? The reason I noticed it is that I ran over some small sticks/branches in the road and it almost ripped out the wire that connects near the bottom of this box.

 

correct. fuel filter is in tank. im headed in for oil change this week. ill ask. if fuel lines are going into and out of. possibly an emissions controll device.? vapor reclimation?
who knows. it was nice when we could all work on the truck ourselves!.

My manual says it is the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister assy.
