Can't add fuel from a plastic gas can
Can't add fuel from a plastic gas can
I have a 2010 F150 Platnium eddition. I had several plastic gas can in my garage used for mowers, HD, boat, etc.... Gas being what it is right now I wanted to add the gas from these typical red plastic gas cans with flexible plastic fill tube to my truck. However, it wont allow me to do so? I have the Easy Fuel set up that has no gas cap. I locked and unlocked the doors, started the truck, you name it....the metal filler neck door will not open to allow the plastic gas filler tube. I assumed it was some sort of anti syphon set up possibly trigger by the metal nozzle and the stataion so I tried to trigger it with the end of a metal ratchet and still nothing. My young daughter lost my oweners manual too so I can't look it up. Any ideas on what is going on here and man an I so glad that I didn't stumble upon this after say running out of gas and hiking out to get a couple gallons of gas only to find out that I still can not add gas to my truck. Thanks everyone.
Are you using the white funnel that came with your truck? It is located under the rear seat on the drivers side if you have a Super Crew. I think its designed this way in case some water gets in there it wont go into your tank. Without this funnel installed in the filler all of your fuel will go on the ground. I tried adding some fuel additive once and it poured all over the ground. I then used the white funnel and it went in just fine.

If the vehicle is new, it should have come with a special funnel that's near/with the jack.
If the vehicle is used, and the special funnel isn't near/with the jack, you can get one from the dealership ..... part # 8U5Z-17B068-B *Co$t is $5-$7.
-OR- if you have an o' automatic transmission fluid funnel, just keep trimming the neck until it can be inserted.

The manual has been lost. I am the only owner of the truck I have had it since this past Nov but last I saw the manual my daughter was messing with it. HHMMM this is odd. I tried to use my own narrow neck funnel before your posts talked about this funnel under the seat and the truck would not allow the funnel to enter, i.e. the metal fuel neck door would not open. The funnel was more than skinny enought to fit too so I guess my new question is how is this funnel under the seat any different that the one I used? Does the truck somehow recognize it and allow the fuel filler neck door to open? Wow I really thinkg that they have over complicate trucks at this point. However I did say that about Harelys too and I do have to say that I like my newer rubber mounted computer controlled engine over the older less dependable heavy vibration ones...

1. Locate the white plastic funnel. It
is located under the second row
driver side seat near the spare tire
tool box.
2. Slowly insert the funnel into the Easy Fuel™ system.
3. Fill the vehicle with fuel from the portable fuel container.
4. When done, clean the funnel or properly dispose of it. Extra funnels
can be purchased from your authorized dealer if you choose to dispose
of the funnel. Do not use aftermarket funnels; they will not work with
the Easy Fuel™ system and can damage it. The included funnel has
been specially designed to work safely with your vehicle.

Your best source of information about actual fuel economy is you, the
driver. You must gather information as accurately and consistently as
possible. Fuel expense, frequency of fill-ups or fuel gauge readings are
NOT accurate as a measure of fuel economy. We do not recommend
taking fuel economy measurements during the first 1,000 miles
(1,600 km) of driving (engine break-in period). You will get a more
accurate measurement after 2,000 miles–3,000 miles (3,000 km–5,000

Filling the tank
The advertised fuel capacity of the fuel tank on your vehicle is equal to
the rated refill capacity of the fuel tank as listed in the Maintenance
product specifications and capacities section of this chapter.
The advertised capacity is the amount of the indicated capacity and the
empty reserve combined. Indicated capacity is the difference in the
amount of fuel in a full tank and a tank when the fuel gauge indicates
empty. Empty reserve is the small amount of fuel remaining in the fuel
tank after the fuel gauge indicates empty.
The amount of usable fuel in the empty reserve varies and should
not be relied upon to increase driving range. When refueling your

I actually had to dig out the damn funnel and use it to dump the gas in the truck.
So I tried using the supplied funnel to put gas in my truck. Good luck trying to stabilize the funnel (which has a very small mouth) and use these stupid new spill proof gas cans. After 15 min. I gave up. Just too frustrating. You would basically need to take the spout off the gas can and put a funnel with a larger mouth in the supplied funnel that really has no mouth at all. Stupid design...that's all I can say.
Yup best method is filler neck -> ford funnel -> large funnel -> gas can
not dumb if you think of Ford's funnel the same way you think about a wheel lock/key setup. It helps prevent theft /tampering/ vandalism in your gas tank

Ford also sells a locking plug if you want to take security a step farther. Might be a nuisance though.
