when to change the oil on new truck
when to change the oil on new truck
guys - I have about 1500 miles on my 11. I was told by my 4x4 shop that now is a good time to change the oil since the engine is broken in now and any deposite's from the engine have broken down into the oil.
Do you guys agree or disagree?
thanks

Ford will tell you to wait till the reminder tells you to. I personally would change it at 3k, reset the reminder, then follow the reminder from then on. This assumes you use Motorcraft oil and filter.
The new ILSAC GF-5 spec oil is supposedly an extended mileage oil compared to the ILSAC GF-4 spec oil. I picked up two 5 qt. bottles of MC 5W20 oil at Walmart this past week and a MC FL-500S filter at O'Reilly Auto Parts for $7.99 + tax. I plan on changing my oil at 4,000 miles and then every 5,000-6,000 miles after that.

I've always had my oil changed at the local dealer and they always indicate the next change interval at 6 months or 3,000 miles. Even though the manual states 5k I believe. That was a 2005, has this changed with new models or is the dealer just trying to soak a few extra coins out of me? I always thought it was odd that they didn't follow their own (MFG) recommendations..
I would go by the book on the first one - I've heard some rumor about them putting some sort of conditioner in there at the factory for a break in period. Maybe that was a different make though - can't remember.

There is an oil change interval thread on the Ford owners website. It specifically mentions that all 2009 and newer model's should change their oil no later than 7,500 miles; 5,000 miles in extreme conditions. It also mentions in our digital owners manual that 10,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first is acceptable on 2011 models. The new ILSAC GF-5 MC 5W20 Syn Blend has a little better specs than the MC Full Syn oil. The Syn Blend specs are close to Mobil 1 (original, not extended oil) 5W20 specs.
I will go 5,000-6,000 miles on my oil changes. The high capacity oil pan is suppose to help keep the oil cooler and run longer than the older trucks. The new 5.0 GT has an 8 qt. oil capacity and our new 5.0 trucks have a 7.7 qt. oil capacity. I just don't trust the oil filter for that length of time. Even the MC filters which I use on all my Ford vehicles.
If you do it early it definetly won't hurt anything. I always do the first one between 2000-3000 miles depending on how it looks. Maybe it doesn't help but sure makes me sleep better. All motorcycles recommend the first change at 600 miles, even ones with seperate gear boxes! The oil that comes out usually looks pretty bad with lots of metalic in it and that can't be good for bearings ect.
thanks guys for your feedback. Im gonna schedule an apt and change the oil in the next few wks. then go with the 10k schedule that Ford recommends - if if causes any engine problems down the road Ford is responsible, not me..at least i hope so!
Buddy has an Acura RSX Type-S and it was the same story. In that case Honda indicated quite strongly that you would be degrading the longevity of the engine by attempting to change it before 7500 miles.

There is no such thing for a Ford product to have "break in" oil. They occasionally put a green dye in the oil to check for leaks at the factory. This is put in randomly as a quality control check. I'd suggest on any NEW engine to change at 1000 miles. You will have all kinds of milling debris in the engine getting flushed, gasket material, dirt/dust from the manufacturing process, and you'll have additive depletion. The newer oils today don't have near the additives of those oils from the 90's and it is going to have to "plate up" the engine when new. Expecting any oil filter to collect and hold all of the manufacturing debris/initial wearables and not go into by-pass is not reasonable. Change it at 1000 miles and then follow the recommended change intervals for you type of driving as specified in the owners manual. Use only Ford speced oils, don't pay a lot for them, sit back and enjoy the ride.
