Chnage Oil Warning Message

Just wondering if this is a coincidence or not.....

I've had my truck for almost exactly 6 months plus 1 week. About a week ago I got the message to engine oil change soon, then it changed to oil change required.

Now, I don't do a lot of driving, the truck only has 4,200 k.m on it (2700 miles), I can't really see it needing a change this quick. I checked the fluid levels at about 2400 miles and the oil wasn't even black yet.

Can anyone confirm the warnings is set to go off at 6 month intervals, or should I actually be getting a change after so few miles?

I don't think the nag is time depedent, if you cycle through the cluster setup menu you will find km/mile interval setting.

That clock is driven by time and milage. If I recall correctly, it is programmed for 6 month/7,500 mile intervals. The only way I know how to change the intervals is with Ford's WDS programmer.

I don't know the answer to that but mine went off at 6 months with 8000 klix on it and I remember the dealer saying something about x months or x mileage.

It's going in tomorrow and I'd been meaning to do the first oil change long before this anyway.

I just happened to read this yesterday in my "online" manual I downloaded (courtesy of a friendly poster on this forum) and it does state the following:

For your convenience, your vehicle is equipped with a message center
which determines the proper oil change service interval. You should
perform the engine oil change as indicated by the message center. The
message center will display ENGINE OIL CHANGE SOON or OIL
CHANGE REQUIRED to indicate when an oil change is needed. The
engine oil change service needs to be completed within two weeks or
500 miles (800 km) after the OIL CHANGE REQUIRED message is
displayed. Your oil change service interval can be up to one year or
10,000 miles (16,000 km). Reset your Intelligent Oil Life Monitor™ after
each engine oil and filter change; refer to the Instrument Cluster
chapter.
If your message center is prematurely reset or becomes inoperative, you
should perform the oil change interval at six months or 5,000 miles
(8,000 km) from your last oil change.

Hope this helps.

Dennis

This is the closest answer out of the bunch. The intervals can be changed in the instrument cluster at percentage levels down from 100%. 100% is 7500 miles or 6 months for 2009/2010's.

Molinoman info was for a 2011, not 2009/2010MY which have different oil change intervals. As you can see getting advice from this forum is not nearly as good as reading your manual. Hockey playoffs are on, read it between periods with a frosty and should be good to go.

Read your owners manual. It tells you in there how to change the parameters.

The parameter's can be changed in 10% interval's in the 2011's. Not sure about the '09-'10 vehicles.

To reset the oil monitoring system to 100% after each oil change [approximately 7,500 miles (12,000 km) or six months] perform the following:
1. Press and release the SELECT/RESET stem to display OIL LIFE = XXX% HOLD RESET = NEW.
2. Press and hold the SELECT/RESET stem for two seconds and release. Oil life is set to 100% and “OIL LIFE SET TO 100%” is displayed.
3. While “OIL LIFE SET TO 100%” is displayed, if a lower oil life start value is desired, press and release the RESET control to reduce the start value. Each press of the SELECT/RESET stem reduces the value by 10 percent.

Note: Oil life start value of 100% equals 7,500 miles (12,000 km) or six months. For example, setting oil life start value to 60% sets the oil life start value to 4,500 miles (7,200 km) and 108 days.

Speaking of oil changes, at my last change, I asked the service advisor how much extra for synthetic, and was told an extra $75 on top of the usual. Anyone else get any out of this world numbers for syn from thier dealer? That just sounded like hiway robbery to me. I stuck with the usual, as I hit the 6 month mark well before my mileage mark. Had the truck just over a year, and she's only got 12,000 km, or 7500 mi.

Cost me $48 for oil and filter today plus they did a minor inspection, greased a few things and checked/topped up fluid at no cost; all done in less than an hour.

I've always changed it myself but just the cost to buy the oil and filter would have been 30-35 lets say and then I'd have to get under it and dispose of the old oil etc.

I think I'm just gonna take it to the dealer for oil changes.

For those of us from Ontario, the season's been over for quite a while now. We've got lots of time for reading before next season ramps up.

It's pretty sad when we've got to cheer for the left coast as our national hope. (Sorry Habs fans, it's the truth.)
