Front air dam below lower valance

OK, I am working away at converting my fx2 into fx4...well sort of.
Got leveling done yesterday and installed my fx4 lower valance.
Has anyone trimed/removed the air dam? That thing hangs down 3-4 inches below lower valance and looks TACKY.

Im assuming this redirects air back into engine for cooling but just curious if anyone has messed with it.
Thanks.
John

I think Ford calls it a splash shield. For water.

Are you talking about this piece?

I believe it's there for a reason.

My understanding is that it minimizes the amount of air disturbance under the truck, thus reducing drag and ever-so-slightly improving fuel mileage.

When the 6.4 Powerstroke was introduced and got such bad mileage, Ford greatly increased the depth of this piece under the Superduty in an attempt to improve mileage. I remember hearing that it was a 0.2 or so mpg increase, but it's been a while and I could be wrong on the number.

You guys with lifted trucks on larger tires probably aren't worried about mpg that much, nor is this little air dam making much difference when it's that far in the air. Just take it off...

I spent more time today trying to see what purpose it has....i agree it must be for wind resistance because nothing else I could see. I originally thought it was deflecting cool air into radiator but after taking some of truck apart to swap lower valance, I realize thats not the case.
Im gonna yank mine off and see what happens.
Thanks.
