I believe all 3.7 Screws have 3.73's. That's the case for 2012.

Just an update. After making a few trips(long) towing my boat, am averaging about 19.5mpg towing. My 2005 Colorado I5 got about 20mpg(same boat/route), 2008 Frontier V6 got 18mpg. With the F150, I can't tell there is a boat behind me, you KNEW you were towing with the others.

Hi all,

So I have the 2011 F150, Super Cab, 5.0L, 3.73 lim slip. I am not coming close to the factory fuel ratings. I have done alot of city driving but I am not impressed with the 14 mpg overall average. I bought the 3.73 for added tow capacity and the lim slip because many truck owners told me it was the only way to go. But with this fuel economy, I kind of wish I got the 3.55 regular axle. If I got stuck, I could always use the 4X4 to get out or use 4X4 off road. I am only towing once every couple of months, more in the summer months. You guys are all laughing with your fuel economy... right to the bank. Its a fun truck to drive though. Next time, 3.55 with regular axle. Any thoughts?

I'm glad you all are so happy with the 3.7. My wife had a 3.7l 2011 Explorer for about 5000 miles and it did great on gas considering the size. We averaged 25mpg on a 1600 mile round trip last summer, and that was cruising at 75+ mph. Around town she got 19mpg and she's not a fuel miser, she only averaged 17 in her Pontiac G6 on the same routes. I towed a 4500lb boat about 10 miles just to try it out and it had no problems at all, that's with the car like Explorer chassis too.

Just put bigger tires on, that will lower your gear ratio.

The Explorer has the 3.5 V6. Slightly different, but a great motor. I had a '07 Edge with a less powerful version of the 3.5. It was strong, and good on gas.

I'm pretty sure that the 3.7 is available in the Mustang, the F150, the Edge Sport, and I think a few Lincolns.

Wow, your right! I thought it was the same engine, we no longer own it though so I was just going off memory. I'm glad you corrected me. Now I'm curious to drive a new 3.7 for comparison purposes, this whole time I've been thinking it was the same engine.

They should offer the 3.5 in a reg cab 2wd version to help out those trying to replace a Ranger. That would get great mpg. Or better yet the 4cyl EB available in the explorer.

You do know this is a 3.7 thread, right?

I would have preferred to have got a Ranger size truck. Problem was, the F150 offered more for the money.

I think that we will see an EB 4 banger in the F150 in the near future. I think that when the F150 goes unibody, they'll have a different engine line up.

If the gas prices go up as high as some say they will, we're all going to be wishing we had more efficient engines.

I have followed this thread since you started it and love it.
I had a Ranger and a 6Cyl Fusion traded for and Ecoboost and a 4Cyl Fusion. Both are better on fuel by far than there the old ones.
Gas is $5.16 a US gal here in Yarmouth N.S. $1.358 per liter and I have no regrets for getting rid of either. My wife and I like to drive and for every 3 tanks of gas we put in these ones it would be 4 in the old.
The 3.7 would be a motor I would consider in my next truck because I don't tow anything with the eco. I just turned 54 yesterday and I really don't need the power of the eco. I have driven the 3.7 and it is a real nice motor.

Hey Snowflake58, a belated welcome to F150 Online!

Glad you've likes this thread. I knew that people would be skeptical about the base V6 and wanted to let people know what I thought of mine. I'm hopeing that this thread will help some people realize that the base V6 is quite capable in many applications.

I wish that Ford had offered the EcoBoost in a regular cab short bed. I had a crew/4X4 as a service loaner. It convinced that in a lighter truck with the EB I could get 23-24 mpg, with some consistancy. I'm going to keep trying for that with my 3.7.

A belated happy birthday to you too!

Filled up yeasterday. 411 mi. 18.95, with a 18.9 onboard. It was reading 19.0 to 19.3 for most of the tank but on the las leg I was on the highway with what seemed like a headwind in both directions. I was hoping to squeeze a 19 out, which would have been good for winter, but the headwind and a couple too many impatient forced downshifts:o kept me in the 18's.

I have a 2011 xlt reg cab 8 ft box 3.7 4x4 in north east Pa. I average 19 mpg. I love this motor. I build wood fired pizza oven kits that weigh 1300 lbs. I haul them with no problem at all.

Just an FYI. Had my truck go into safety Mode this past Monday... there was a tech bulletin dealing with calibration/cold start/fuel mix... it is out there for any truck mfg before 4/1/11. I was far from pleased with only 13k miles on my truck to have issues... but it has been like a performance upgrade!! The pedal and response is far improved and I am getting what appears better gas mileage as icing on the cake. If anyone is having concerns on performance would suggest asking... all they had to do was update the program on the control module... perhaps folks can do something before they need to have their rigs towed like I did.

First post here, great thread.

I bought a 2012 3.7 V6 F150, regular cab, 8ft bed, 3.73 lim 4x2 w/tow package about a month ago. My first brand new vehicle ever---it took me until 37 years old to do that!--and also my first full size truck.

When I drove the truck off the lot it had 25 miles on it and was showing mpg of something like 11. As a sort of game I did not reset the system until I hit 1000 miles, yesterday. 19.3 mpg. My commute is 60 miles a day, about 75% highway 25% stop and go. Like OP, I'm driving this thing with a very light touch. I want to see what kind of efficiency I can get out of it. Maybe I'm weird, but it chaps my *** to be forced to brake because I was going too fast, so I am keeping generous following distances, easing out of stops, etc. It's actually kind of fun to try driving nice and easy. On the highway I'm keeping it between 60 and 70, though closer to the former mostly. I really don't mind people passing me and I've noticed that very often the folks who blow by me reappear 20 minutes later at the same exit stop light, two or three places in front of me. So for less stress on me and my investment (the truck), and less gas, we all get there about the same time.

I haven't towed yet. And I also haven't put in the saddle box or material rack. Those will come as time and budget allows.

If I were rich I would have gotten 4wd Screw and a v8 but I'm not, and I can't say how happy I am that Ford made this option for people like me. I don't have to carry a lot of materials, and my tools don't amount to very much weight, but I do need a full size truck, so this V6 looks like a perfect fit. Time will tell.

So far, I love it and all my family and friends are making fun of me for being so attached to it.

In time, I'm interested in some slight mods. I have never done any tuning on modern vehicles, so I'm totally ignorant to that scene. I'd def. be interested in something that improves the shifting schedule, as the 6 to 4 downshifts can be annoying, but I'm not in a hurry to try anything out just yet.

My first investment (after the afore-mentioned toolbox and rack, plus seat covers) will be a K&N air filter. We'll see after that.

I read this thread in it's entirety this morning and I'll be checking back to see what people have to say about the 3.7.

Cheers.
