Swap Tow Mirrors to Std. Platinum Power Fold
Swap Tow Mirrors to Std. Platinum Power Fold
I own a 2011 Platinum 6.2 with the HD towing package and badly want to swap the tow mirrors for the power folding mirrors that come standard on the Platinum. I have searched for clear instructions on the swap but have found mixed information on whether it is simply plug and play and exactly what parts are needed. I know at minimum I need the mirrors and correct controlling switch but have also read is that I may need a relay and/or a programming change performed by the dealer to get the power fold feature to work. I have contacted two dealers and neither can confidently confirm the requirements.
I wold very much appreciate instruction from anyone that has performed this swap or has a link to solid instructions.
Thanks!

Mirrors
I would have already bought a new Platinum, replacing my 09 Platinum if I could get the 6.2 with the standard mirror. The Harley and Limited are nice, but I like the Platinum better. I have also talked with two dealers and they both say it would be costly and difficult to change the mirrors. My neighbor just bought a GMC instead of the Platinum because of the mirror issue.

To the O/P, your cheapest route is probably to find a wrecked Platinum, or better yet, a Platinum owner that wants to swap mirrors with you.
EDIT: there's a thread on the first page where a Platinum owner just installed the tow mirrors - maybe he has the stock mirrors still? Click me

Thanks for the replies. I'm not as concerned about the price and availability of the parts as I am in making sure the swap is functional.
First hand experience that confirms plug and play or anything extra required other than mirrors and switch is what I need to confirm.
Thanks.

Keep searching on some of the forums. This has been done I believe, but you may have to add a extra wire to the connector or something and maybe even a different mirror switch. I really dont remember. If I get a chance I will look for the thread. I know I have seen it.
The switch will be needed for sure. Just not clear on any other requirements. I searched and found only vague and incomplete info. Some stated a relay was required, some that a dealer reprogram would be needed and some say it just works when plugged in.
I'm about ready to just pull the trigger on them and the switch and see what happens.

Got my new mirrors and switch installed. Lights and adjustment works perfectly but the power fold is a no go. The wiring harness and connector contain the additional wiring for the pins which were not present/used on the tow mirrors so I feel the wiring is there. I read on a message board once that dealer programming was necessary to enable the power fold function but two dealers have not been able to confirm this yet.
Of course any help is appreciated and I will update with any progress. Thanks.

I can't help you much with the mirrors but this is the exact reason the Platinum I am about to buy will not have the max tow option. I think the tow mirrors are uglier than homemade sin and the folding mirrors are much more usable option for me. Thanks for trying this out and confirming my opinion that I don't want to fool with it.
The tow mirrors do provide awesome visibility though and definitely have their place. I would have opted out of the HD tow package but was dead set on the 6.2 which requires it. I really don't understand the logic in forcing a mirror downgrade on the Platinum by losing power fold when the feature is available on the F-250 tow mirrors.
Botill, did you ever figure out how to get the mirrors to fold? I am deciding on purchase the 2011 model with the max tow package and swap the mirrors and switch. But if you can't get it working, I may just get it w/o the max tow package.

I just purchased a 2011 Lariat and could not get the tow mirrors, which I need. I have the power fold, turn-light mirrors with the chrome tops. I don't care about being able to power fold the mirrors. It sounds like I can "plug and go" if I get a set of tow mirrors, correct? Anyone have a set of tow mirrors they would want to change?
