Coyote 5.0L: Power and Mileage

You guys are going to love the new Coyote 5.0L DOHC. While I dont currently own a 2011 F150 I do own a 2011 Mustang GT with the M6 and 3.55.

While I tend to launch in 2nd and skip shift (The engine has so much torque Ive launched in 4th a few times) and shift at low rpm (driving on torque) it remains true that the worst mpg Ive ever gotten was 20.0 mpg on the break-in tank. I routinely get 25-28 mpg in my mixed city/highway commute from a cold start with speeds from 30-70 mph. The 15.5 miles usually takes around 25 minutes.

Its beyond impressive that the engine can do this and still run a 12.6 @ 114 at almost 3800 lb race weight (I aint a light weight).

It routinely returns 3.5 mpg city and at least 1.5 mpg highway better than my 2007 GT (4.6L 3V) with the same 3.55 Gears. I suspect the highway difference may actually be greater as I havnt run enough strictly highway to pin it down completely.

I would no be suprised if some of you (the ones who rotinely get better mpg because of driving style) average over 20.0 mpg in mixed driving. That is something in a 5000 lb automatic truck that can tow 8000 lb and run 14 second 1/4 miles.

DISCLAIMER: All mpg are over the last 5000 miles on G100 (as opposed to E10) and are hand calculated. The Info Center routinely reads 2-7% low depending on temperature.

PS Im likely to add a 2011 F150 to my stable soon.

I love mine so far. The power is truly superior to the 5.4L.

Mileage for me is about 1 mpg better or even more.

Mine is a 2011 F150 and 5.0 is in a 126" reg cab 4x4 with 3.73 gears.I only have the 26 gal. tank.Went on a small trip with 10% city 10% interstate and 80% rural roads. When I pulled back into the garage the computer said 20.3 mpg.I am happy with that as it is on my first tank.
Remember, the heavier truck you buy the lower mpg you can expect.I read somewhere once that you lose 4% mpg for every 100 lb you carry.Don't know if that holds true for these newer engines.

How's power in that small truck? I have a FX2 screw and it feels lots faster than the FX4 I test drove.

The power is great.I have not really ran it very hard yet because I like to get at least 500 or 600 miles on it first.

With a 3400-3500 pound car, I hope you see that 25 kind of mileage. The F150 will most likely have to be pushed with a tailwind to get 20 being 2000 pounds heavier and sporting a much heavier set of boots and rims.

My point of view also Smokewagun.A Crewcab F150 weighs much more than a reg cab so expect lower MPGs.

My research found that you lose about .7 mpg for every 500 lbs of added weight. So having the regular cab doesn't gain you that much. I have always had regular cabs and just ordered my first SCAB and I wanted to make sure that I didn't lose much mpg for having it. I didn't write down the source, its just in my notes that I have been making over the last 6 months on the new trucks.

Like I've said, those of us who have owned a 5.0 for a while now know the potential of this engine. It is amazing. I get around 18.5mpg with my Mustang 5.0, 6spd 3.73. And when I do drive it, it is not nicely. I drive the crap out of it and still get this mileage. Pretty impressive. If I drove my 5.4 F-510 like this, it would have been 12mpg, maybe less.

So I guess with the weight difference you would lose about 1 mpg.I also read that a longer cab increases mpg so maybe on the highway there would be little difference.City driving would probabally be the biggest loss getting that extra weight moving.

I just traded my '07 STX S/C for a '11 STX S/C with the 5.0 engine. The wife needed a new car to replace her '02 Stang GT as it has 90K miles and is starting to have some minor issues. The dealer took almost 9K off the '11 Fusion MSRP after GT trade and wanted to sell me a '11 Regular Cab STX with the 3.7 engine. It had a little more pep above 4K rpm's than the '10 STX with the 4.6L 2V I test drove.

The dealer was only able to take off $2K from the MSRP on the regular cab. He wanted to sell a second vehicle badly and asked me to test drive a Race Red 5.0 STX and he stated "I will make you a stupid deal you can't refuse just to sell the first '11 F150". The test drive was great! It pulled a lot harder than the '05 Nissan Titan I bought new in '05. It has Sync, tow, step bars, fog lamps, select shift transmission, STX decor and power package. The price ended up being $8K under MSRP which included $2500 more than I owed on my '07 trade.

I will post pictures once the rain clears up.

I test drove a FX4 SCab with the 5.0 today and really liked it. The mileage was showing around 15.5 to 16.5 in city traffic. 35 to 50mph.
