2009 4.6 vs 5.4

Gents

I am about to upgrade my 2005 Lariat to either a 09 4.6 or perhaps a new one.
Is there much difference in the MPG in the 09 year between the 4.6 and 5.4. I do not do any towing or heavy hauling, a little hunting and a fair amount of highway travel. There are a few used 4.6's up here in Edmonton that are used with about 50k on them.

Thanks Greg

The 4.6 3 valve is a great little engine. For your use, it's the best choice. If you want a new truck, you may want to get a 2011 with one of the new engines.

I have to agree with glc here. I have the 4.6 / 3 valve motor in my current (2010) truck and it replaced a virtually identical 2005 with the 5.4 liter motor in it. Yes, the 5.4 had the 4 speed automatic and a 3.55 LS rear end and the new truck has the 6 speed automatic with a 3.73 LS rear, but otherwise they were identical. Why is that so important? Because the new truck will flat run away and hide from the old one and get 2-3 MPG better mileage whilst doing it. I absolutely love the "little" motor and do not miss the 5.4 one bit - even when towing a 4,000 boat.

choices

Thanks fellas, I'll look around and see if I can find one in a 2010. Seems like 95% of the trucks up here in Alberta come with the 5.4, the only 4.6's I have found are in 2009's.

Regards Greg

Don't get a 4.6 2 valve - those only come with a 4 speed auto.

Said another way, that's a dog engine with a dog transmission compared to the 3 valve with the 6 speed.

Suitable for a stripped out work truck or DD commuter though - a car substitute.
