3.7 - has anyone driven one yet?

Howdy gang, first post here.

(intro - I've had 2 ford truck, ('92 Ranger & '97 F150) + dad was pretty much a ford only guy. my last truck '97 Scab w/ 4.2) drank it's own anitfreeze and died about two years ago, and since then I've been stuck in a Civic. Planning on getting a new truck sometime between now and March (birthday/Ford truck month) Anyway, back to my post)

I know the Ecoboost is kewl and all, but am I the only one more interested in the 3.7? I want a truck for truck stuff, yes, but it will be, first and foremost, a daily driver. I am not sold on either the EB or 5.0 getting 20+ real world mileage, but I am really liking what I read about the 3.7.

Has anyone driven a 3.7 yet? Hopefully in a bigger (Screw) truck? The 302hp looks nice, but I hope the lower torque rating does not ruin the driveability...

Jerry

There have been many changes in engines .For example my 2003 had a 4.2 6 cyl with 200 hp and the 2011 at 3.7 has 300 hp !! That's a 50 % increase in power. I can't see that the 3.7 would have any problems as a multi - use daily driver

You'll get a few replies here, but do yourself a favor and search through the threads in this forum. The new engines have been discussed at length in countless threads and you'll find a lot of good information about the 3.7...

If you want a 3.7 in a Screw, you can only get it with a 5.5' bed and 2 wheel drive in a XL or XLT. If you were happy with the power of your 97 Scab 4.2, you will be happy with one of these I'm sure. Get the highest numerical axle ratio they offer, from what I see the 3.7 loves to wind - it shifts at 7 grand WOT.

If Ford ever offers a manual tranny with the 3.7 I just might get myself a new truck.

Mete - that is pretty much what I have been thinking. I would have been OK with the power of the 4.2, but low power and 15-16mpg drove me nuts.

glc - yea, I really want a 4x4, but don't really need one. I am still trying to come to terms with having another 2x4, I had a lot of "almost stuck" fishing trips in my '97. If I could get the Screw 4x4 6.5' bed with the 3.7, I would buy the first one that landed at Ron Carter.

Tx Chris, I guess that is your standard answer for all newbies? cuz I did search, and even manually paged back thru several pages of discussion. There are several dozen threads on the 3.5 and 5.0, but the 3.7 usually just gets a "oh and there is a new base 3.7 motor too" type comment - no one is really talking about it. even the "work truck shootout" thread got only 1-2 replys. but 300hp, and 20+ real world MPG? I am surprised no one seems interested...

I haven't driven a 3.7 F150 but I'm curious about how it's going to work out as well.

I'm currently driving an '07 Ford Edge. It's got the 3.5 with the 6 speed, and I've got to tell you, it can get up and go pretty good for a heavy grocery go getter.

I'm thinking that I'd like a regular cab short bed 4x4. Specs say that it's a 5k lb. truck. I just hope that 278 lb. ft. torque is enough to get that thing moving.

I'm going to try to resist changing vehicles untill '12, when I turn 40. It's going to be tough as I'm pretty excited now about the new engines. If I can wait it'll give me a chance to see how these trucks perform with the new engines.

Good luck to you. I'll be checking back on this thread to see if anyone has drive an F150/3.7.

No foul meant and it has nothing to do with you being new; I was simply trying to help you find an answer quicker since it's been discussed. Once you're around for a while, you'll see the same 5 threads posted ten times per week and you'll know why some folks suggest the search function.

Jerry, if you want a 4x4 Screw, your choices are 5.0, EB, or a leftover 4.6 3v 2010. From what we are guessing, the EB is going to get just as good or better mileage as the 3.7.

You will not be able to get a Screw 4x4 6.5' bed with a 3.7L V6. In fact, the only Screw you will be able to get a 3.7L V6 in is if it is 4x2 and only has the 5.5' bed. These trucks are hefty, and in that configuration, weigh about 1000lbs more than your old '97 SCab. But have you thought about considering a 2011 SCab? They do have a lot more leg room in them than the 97-03 SCabs, and you'd be able to get it in 4wd with the 3.7L.
