I still think the engines have way more durability/life expectancy over the transmissions especially with all the issues they've had so far with them.

Actually turbos have been around a heck of a lot longer than VCT. I had a factory turbo in a 1962 Corvair.

I think superchargers have been around since at least the 50's if not 40's. They were originally called altitude compensators and were used on air-craft for obvious reasons.

In my 2011 brochure, it also shows that the Ecoboost engine has VCT.

Superchargers have been around longer than that, dusenburg had them in the early 30's, and Bentley had a supercharged 3 liter in the 20's

My point was lost. Almost all engine nowadays have vct, where as very few have turbos comparably. It has to be current day technology comparison, not 40 or 50 years back.

Although it could be argued that with all the r&d in the turbo diesels could offset the difference. But it comes down to possibly problems that can occur, and turbos systems have way more mechanisms. The SD's had miles of problems.

Towing Capacity

I'm interested in knowing what the difference is in towing capacity for the various power plants and models......are they better than the 2010's? I tried to figure it out from what's published and got confused.

Can anyone make this comparison from experience driving a 5.0L and also a 5.4L under these conditions:

2011 5.0L - stock

2009+ 5.4L with 6sp, a custom performance tune from VMP/Troyer/PHP, stock sized tires.

The factory 5.4L typically made huge gains with a tune and became a torque monster, just curious how the tuned 5.4L stacks up to the 5.0L engine.

Stock 2009's: 320-horsepower at 5,200-rpm and 390 of torque at 3,500-rpm

Then with tuning I think they can get up to 20hp and 50 more torque?

Stock 2011's: 360 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 380 of torque at 4,250 rpm

I used to have an 09 Lariat (4x2 screw), loved the truck but had to get rid of it due to personal reasons.

Test drove a 2011 Platium 4x4 with a 5.0 yesterday; totally different animal. The 5.0 pulls much harder and has a wonderful sound

This is why I will wait for the EB. If the full power hits at 1,700rpm's then the 3.7L will be efficient and awesome at the same time.

It develops close to full torque at 1700 but not hp. From the videos that I have watched, if you are either accelerating hard or towing heavy then rpms will be up around 4-5k and shift points are even higher.

Oh BTW, the ecoboost is 3.5L not 3.7

Very happy w/my 5.0 so far. No comparison to my '09 5.4. Couldn't bring myself to get a V-6 if it had 6 turbos. Can't wait to get my Super 44 on!

That's with E85.

On regular, it's 310hp and 365lb-ft of torque.

The 50lb-ft gain from a tuner isn't peak torque, but the maximum gain anywhere in the power band.

So the 5.0 can still be stronger then a chipped 5.4

Yes, the 5.0 is better than the 2010 5.4 hands down. In every way.
