5.4 2v Vs. 4.6 3v

Did anyone make the jump from the old 5.4 to the current 4.6 3v with 6 speed? I'm wondering how comparable the power is when towing and get-up-and-go. What about mpg?

I'm really wanting a Ecoboost, but it will be a while before I can afford one of those, so I'm looking for something to get me by for a few years. I'm currently looking for something in the sub-$20k range and I can't find any 5.4's for that price that aren't completely stripped down models.

I went from a 2007 5.4 F150 to a 2010 4.6 F150. The 6spd tranny is great and the power seems to be about the same. You will not regret the 4.6, the only reason I would get the 5.4 would be maybe if I towed BIG loads all the time but even then I would look at an SD. mpg's are a little improved. Get up and go is about the same.

The 4.6 3v puts a stock 5.4 2v to shame, the only thing that keeps the 5.4 competitive is the lighter body.

I went from a 2005 short box / regular cab with the 5.4 liter 3 valve automatic (4 speed) and a 3.55 LS rear to an identical 2010 except it has the 4.6 liter 3 valve and the 6 speed automatic with a 3.73 LS rear. The new truck will flat out run away and hide from the old one. I'm perfectly happy.

BTW: The 5. 4 liter 2 valve motor? Not even close.

I'd LOVE to see a drag race between a 09+ 4.6L 3V and a 04-08 5.4L 3V (with the same cab/bed/drivetrains to keep weight/comparisons as close as possible).

Next year I'll be purchasing a truck so I am curious. My thought is the 09+ 4.6L would win.

I'm also curious how much (if any) a 09+ 5.4L would pull away from a 09+ 4.6L 3V.

Like I stated, from my personal experience with two virtually identical trucks, it wouldn't even be close. I like my 4.6 so much better than my 5.4 for many, many reasons. And yes, I do tow with it. The difference in towing a 4,500 pound boat and trailer is almost insignificant.

Interesting Mark... while the 4.6 in my truck has noticeably less torque than my old 5.4l it sure does spin out better. Feels like it has a wider powerband.

X2,Less torque but seems to pull harder and higher in the rpm range.

Later Mark.

The two extra gears make a huge difference.
