K&N CAI question

By mistake the wife bought a K&N CAI for her 09 Lariat. (I asked her to got a drop in K&N air filter, anyways) I’ve been reading that this will cause a lean condition, without a tune. (I’m I reading that right?) Should we just got a mail order tune, or would a dyno tune be better? Also who should we get to do this for us, any ideas? (We live in Kentucky, I wouldn’t mine driving a few hundred miles to get the most bang for the buck) The truck won’t be dragged raced any per say, just a DD/tow vehicle. If ya have not guess yet, this is our first try at this, so sorry about the silly questions in advance.

will not cause a lean condition on 09 or 10 and you might consider doing the gotts mod and take the k&n cai back as it wont give you any extra h.p. and you will save $$$$$$ and achieve the same without the intake noise.

I have the K&N intake set-up w/ Magna-flow exhaust. It will not cause a lean condition by itself or paired with after-market exhaust. You will run into the lean problem if you pair it with a programmer unless you order on with custom tunes. Especially the Cortex tuner. I have the Edge CS and it has some minor detonation on the bottom-end, will be ordering custom tunes soon.

We tryed that, and we would take to big of a hit to return it, so we'll keep it. And yes I don't care for the intake noise much, sounded like an old 4barrel kicking in. So we took it off, because I thought it would make it lean. I've read about the Gotts mod, would it help to do that also with the CAI?

If you are looking for someone to tune it Lee Blankenship of Blankenship Tuning and Performance is located in Shelbyville, KY. He is as good as it gets and has treated me great over the years. He has a really nice Mustang Dyno. 502 548 6318

Nope not the 2010 yet. I am trying to be strong because i have a tendency to let things snowball out of control lol. I am sure it will end up with a intake, tune, exhaust but thats all i keep telling myself. Hell when i got my 97 i put a cold air intake on it, now its got a built motor, built trans, and built rear, and has had a vortech, a couple different ported Eatons and a Kenne Bell on it and im in the middle of the turbo build. The goal is to keep the 10 as close to stock as possible so i can still use it unlike the 97.

It's still an issue ...

Fellas - y'all are suffering under the misconception that yer 09+ trucks are exempt from this issue:

It's all personal preference at that point.

I'm not necessarily saying that a CAI is bad for the engine, but my concern is the fact that the AFR is already starting out at a dead 14.6 to 1 and historically CAIs cause the engine to run even leaner. I certainly wouldn't be running a CAI without appropriate tuning to correct any resultant lean problems, especially when I can pick up 7+ HP with a simple, free modification.

Intakes that do not require a tune are often just as restrictive as stock and do not result in large power gains."
Well-documented and already discussed several times - You still have a slot-style MAF; pecker with the region within which that MAF resides and you can expect to have problems.

The K&N is unremarkable - expect little to gain and much to lose (IAT's will rise, and yer MAF is at risk of fouling due to migratory filter oils).

Additionally - if you tow, you may also experience some objectionable intake noise / drone - the reason for the aformentioned "knobbly bits"

Stay stock or go Gotts.

I hear ya man. That's why I never modded the Lightning. All it has is a drop in KN, and trans valve body. (Once you start, it never stops) hahaha The wife was not either, but we had a small miscommucation on the KN filter, so now we are stuck with the CAI system. Good luck on the turbo build, sounds like it's going to be mean!!

Well the lower part of the airbox was still installed, just had the KN filter sitting in the bottom half of the air box, with a 3 sided wall and a rubber seal on top of it to seal to the hood when closed. The front part of the KN was pointing at the fender. It didn't look like it would help, but thought I'd ask. Thanks for the insight man!!
