2011 mpg
I met one of the drivers of the 2011 EB driving challenge at a gas station in my hometown. He was in a Candy Red 2011 EB towing a large boxed trailer. He was going from Dallas area back to Detroit.
He said he gets about 11 mpg towing the large boxed trailer (that was advertising the 2011 Ecoboost) and about 23 mpg on the highway without the trailer.

Eh...
I think the numbers will continue to dissapoint for anyone who already owns a 2009+ model, perhaps even a 2004+ model. As someone mentioned above, and I mentioned a bit back, I don't think you will see any meaningful/impactful MPG gains unti Ford ditches the current frame/body they have now, and completely redesign it from the ground up with MPG as a major focus, not just an afterthough as in the past builds. Keep in mind that the '09 design was being worked on long before things turned sour, first with gas prices, then later with the economy as a whole. It was too long into development for Ford to do much of anything, can't blame them.
But I'm sure when they redesign this heavy beast, she'll be a much lighter, leaner machine. And then you'll see a lot more performance numbers out of engines like the EB when they plunk it inside the all-new F-150 frame/shell.
Unfortunately, I don't think you'll see the redesign for a few more years (my guess is 2014 or 2015 Model Year). If you look at when all the manufacturers are planning to have their new pickups come out, you'll see why Ford will milk this current model for a few more until they can come out with theirs at the same time, and most likely destroy the competition like they always do.
So far the only rumor in regards to the next redesign was a comment from Mike Levine to go look at what's happening with some European frames for an idea of what Ford is considering for their next F-150 frame.
Until then, there's only so much MPG they can squeeze out of the current heavy design. I hate that even the EB will most likely only get 17MPG City. 3 measely MPG better than my 5.4 2009? With a small gas tank on top of that?Sucks, but what can you do? Nothing. Just wait for the redesign I suppose.

I'll take the avg 13-20mpg for the superiority strength, and safety of these trucks. I hope when the next full redesign happens they don't weaken these trucks too much..
And it always cracks me up when one of the guys getting realy good mileage out of a 5.4 claims to do as well as the new motors. Sure, you're getting good mileage once in a while, but you're in the vast minority. Most people driving a 5.4 are getting 3-8 MPG worse than those lucky 3% of 5.4 owners claiming 20's on the highway.
No kidding. My 5.4 mileage sucked. My 2011 Mustang GT that I romp on when I drive it gets much better milage and I drove the truck like an old lady. I predict the 5.0 will get actually get the advertised mileage in normal operating conditions, unlike the 5.4.

An increase of 3 mpg is over 20% when you are starting at just 14 mpg. If someone offered you a 20% pay increase, you'd turn it down?
What happened to the 20% average increase in fuel economy that Ford has been talking about.
The outgoing 5.4 in 4x2 got 14/20
The 5.0 in 4x2 gets 15/21
That is a 5% city-7% hwy increase- big deal!
According to ford the 5.0 is actually the replacement for the old 4.6, so let's compare them
4.6 4x2= 15/19
The 5.0 in 4x2 gets 15/21
That is a 0% city-10% highway increase- Big Whoopee!
Then we add in the 6.2 at 12/17
I am still hoping 17/24 out of the ecoboost.

Before getting new tire put on, I was getting 16.5 city and 20 highway in my 2009.
Once I swapped my worn out SR-A's for a set of 275/70/18 BFG AT KO's it dropped to 14 city and 17 highway.

I think the 3MPG gain is excellent considering everything else. Even with the small gas tank, you're only 60-70 miles short of the 5.4L's range with the 36 gallon tank. Not only that, but it's still saving money in fuel costs; anywhere from $400-800 dollars a year. May not sound like a lot, but the amount saved would only go up if fuel prices ever get worse.
If I recall correctly Ford put out that it would be an increase of UP to 20%. I wouldn't expect to see those numbers until the Ecoboost comes out. I think you are doing the math wrong anyway. 10% of 14 is 1.4 add that to 14 and you get 15.4. Since 4 is less than 5 you round down. So the final outcome is just short of a 10% gain in the city. The exact number is actually 7% city. 5% of 20 is 1 add that to the 20 and you get 21. That makes the highway improvement only 5%. Also notice that the MPG numbers are not given with anything after the decimal. That means the actual improvement could be as much as 2-3% points higher or lower due to rounding. You are correct though that the 5.0 is the replacement for the 4.6, not the 5.4 and those numbers you figured are correct.
In my 05 5.4 I get about 15 mpg. If I fall flat on my face and get only 20 mpg on average with EcoBoost that will be a 33% increase! I expect to do even better on the highway, probably mid 20's. At 20 mpg combined overall, I will save about $950.00 a year at current gas prices. That's 25% off my fuel bill. Over 4 years, $3800.00 in savings. This is hugely significant.

You guys need to read this article to understand how dificult it is to get a 1 mpg gain.

Curious, if a certain engine recomends (but not requred) use of premium fuel, does the epa then test it with premium?
You know where I'm going with this...
If YES then that would make it tough for a manufacturer....

The 20% average increase is for the Ecoboost only.
