Door handle replacement?

Hi,

I had the unfortunate experience of having someone try to break into my truck (broad daylight in a busy parking lot). They 'punched' the lock out of the driver side door, busted up the plastic 'bucket' behind the handle, and dented the door up. They weren't able to get in, but I'm left with the damage that needs to be fixed.

The quote from the dealer was around $1100 to fix, which included repainting the door - which I didn't want to deal with. I was able to have a Paintless Dent Repair guy fix the dents (looks remarkably good, and I'm **** and have a black truck so that's saying a lot).

Can the plastic 'bucket' behind the handle be replaced separate from the door handle? The quote from the dealer was to replace the whole thing. How difficult is it to do, if possible?

The lock cylinder looks easy to replace, though I'll have to have it rekeyed.

It's a 2010 Supercrew with the XLT Chrome package if that makes any difference.

Thanks!

You can order the handle online or get it at a dealer. The handle and bucket are one piece. The lock is separatem. The are instructions in the Articles and How To section.

Thanks - is there any way to determine the appropriate part number so I can ensure I'm getting a matching handle?

I have no idea about the 2009 and 2010s, but when I bought one for my 05, there were only two. The plain one and the one with the key pad entry. Check out Tasca Ford online parts and see what they have listed for your truck. Or call the dealer parts department and see what they can tell you.

Probably the best way is to call Tasca and give them your VIN - then they will order the appropriate handle for you.

there are some other variables to part numbers besides whether it has the keypad or not. are they ptm? are they 100% black or chrome? mine is black, but the part you actually pull on is chrome. you have to be specific when ordering.

yep - that's why I was wondering about part numbers. There seem to be a lot of variables.

I'll give them a call on Tuesday.

It's amazing how much trouble some selfish idiot with a screw driver and a few seconds can cause! I guess I should be happy they didn't get the truck, but still, this is an expensive pain to deal with.

Yours would be the chrome handle. I have PTM and they use primed for the description. Although it doesnt give you much detail on the online catalog, the chrome option would be the chrome handle and not the bucket. Ford does not have a handle that is completely chrome from what I know. Just thought Id add my 2 cents.

Keep your old tumbler, you will need to get the numbers from the pins to key your new cylinder. The new lock will come with a full set of pins your load it yourself.
You can add a hose clamp to your new door handle cylinder, that is what the jimmi jammer product does.

The handle is chrome with a textured black plastic bucket/trim. I saw several chrome handles with PTM buckets, but haven't seen one that matches what I currently have.

On the tumbler - is rekeying something you can do on your own? I understand the basics of how locks work, but have never actually messed with one before.

i have heard of some leaving the tumbler out making it screwdriver proof. it would suck if your battery died though.

I have re-keyed several. The hard part is when they punch the lock they can bind the pins so you can't get them out to read the # on them. Worst case you can pull a good cylinder to get the #'s. You just have to put the right piece in the right hole and put a spring in it. Then slip the core into the cylinder.

It sounds like you may have had an aftermarket chrome sticky on your handle. Was it an XLT with chrome pkg? Like a Putco stick on?

That is putting a rear door handle on the front. Yes it means you rely on keyless entry FOB.

The original lock cylinder is destroyed. I have it, but it's smashed beyond recognition so I don't see removing the pins to be feasible. I do have the tag that came with the keys when I purchased the truck it that helps any.

I do have the XLT Chrome package. I know the handle is 'simulated' chrome plastic - but it's not a standard wrap as it completely encompasses the handle.

I'd be fine using a rear handle for the front if it fits. I understand the risk of a dead battery, but would rather risk that than have to deal with this mess again should someone else decide they wanted to break in... Would it fit?

I have installed rears on the front doors on Super Dutys, I assume the rear will fit on the front door for the F150 as well. You just remove the extra rods that went to the handle, lock. You need the numbers off each pin it is not the same as the cut#.

If I eliminated my locks I would run a 12 volt jack from the battery to the bumper or such. That way you could jump power to the battery if it were dead.
