Fuel leak with 1st fill up

My brand new '10 FX4 leaks fuel from the back side of the filler neck when I fill it up. The fuel runs down the outside of the filler tube and will drip onto the ground underneath the truck. At not point during the fill up did the fuel come out the capless opening or run down the outside of the body. I refilled a couple of days later and the exact same thing happened.

Anyone else experience this?

Unless its just a lose clamp or something I would assume this is a fairly big safety issue and not sure who to contact.

Any direction would really be appreciated.

did this happen all the time while you were refueling or after it was full if it was doing it after it was full its normal there is an overflow and it will vent to the ground but if its doing while fueling you have a problem.

It happens to me also. If I get to carried away and try to get more fuel in than it can handle it comes out exactly where you say. You just have to let the pump cut it of and make sure you have placed the nozzle in correctly. There's a marker on the nozzle that shows how far to insert the nozzle. Didn't know that until a woman run over saying my truck tank was full and it was coming out of the over flow all over the floor. That's when she showed me the proper way to place the nozzle. Ain't done the same thing since.

This is kinda what happens:

1. Nozzle in the filler tube
2. Pull the lever on nozzle all the way back
3. As tank gets filled the lever will release when the fuel reaches it however the tank isn't completely filled (not fuel leakage at this point)
4. Continue to slowly fill by pulling the nozzle lever slightly back so fuel is released at a slower flow rate.
5. Lever will disengage again when the fuel reaches it but this time it will start to leak down the outside of the filler tube.

No fuel rises above the small trap door in the filler neck during any part of the fill up.

If the excess fuel is being vented out it must be before it rises above the nozzle trap door. So I take it this is normal?

Yep your over filling the tank. Same exact problem I had. Make sure you put nozzle in depending on the marker on nozzle and don't try to fill further than the pump will allow. Once the pump cuts of then the tank is full. If it's cutting of early then the nozzle is to far in.
