Low Profile Weatherguard Toolbox Installed, Pics

I decided when I bought my truck, based on input from various forum members and others, that I should buy a Weatherguard toolbox because supposedly those are the best brand to get. While they are a lot more expensive than other brands and although I won't be keeping thousands of dollars worth of tools in there, I did want to spend the time/effort/money to get the best for my truck because I do plan on keeping it for a long time.

When I was shopping for a Weatherguard toolbox, I ran into some problems about which models would fit my 2010 Screw 5.5 ft bed truck. Half the shops, and half the time I called Weatherguard headquarters, I was told that the low profile saddle box wouldn't fit my truck, and the other half of the time I was told it would. One guy at a local shop even told me that he had just installed a low profile one on a new F150 work truck and it wouldn't fit so they had to put some wooden cribbing underneath it on the rails until it was high enough to clear. I imagine he was just lying to cover his own butt since he told me he had the toolbox in stock and when I actually went up there to get it, it was nowhere to be found. I posted a thread on here asking if anybody knew if it would fit and only had minimal success so in case anybody is interested in getting one I decided to post a new thread with the actual answer. Eventually I got a hold of a supervisor at Weatherguard who then checked with one of the tech guys and another guy to state positively that the low profile would fit my truck.

I called around to several local shops to get price quotes and one of the two local Fastenals offered the lowest price and fastest delivery time (whereas the other local Fastenal offered the highest price and slowest delivery time, still don't understand that). So, I ordered a silver low-profile toolbox. But then I started second-guessing myself on whether I should have ordered the black one. Called up the Fastenal, and they also got a black one shipped, too, so that I could take a look at both and choose. When they came in, I went done to the store and looked at them. I thought the silver one would look best with my truck, but unfortunately, it had a mechanical problem, so they had to order another one. Shortly, after leaving the store, I went back and inquired on whether they could also ship the regular standard silver one also because I figured the low-profile toolbox would have sat a little deeper and had a little more room. They did just that. So, today they both came in and after much debating, I stuck with the silver low-profile one. The guys at the Fastenal I dealt with were extremely nice and helpful. Also, a local shop called The Truck Stop installed my toolbox for free. All in all, it took a lot of time/effort/money to get this toolbox, but I'm very happy with it. So, in case anybody is interested in getting one for their truck, here are some pictures. Oh, and by the way, the standard full size box also fits easily.

After seeing how much extra space there is, I still don't know why it was such a big deal for people to know that it would fit my truck. I mean it's not even close to not fitting but oh well.

Did you happen to take any pictures of the fullsize version sitting on your truck?

Here's the full size on mine, more pics in the photo album. I pulled the Weatherguard labels off. Great tool box, this is the third truck I've had it on with no problems. It started on my old Superduty. I did have to drill new holes for the j-hooks so I could use all four to secure it, but that only took 10 extra minutes.

No, sorry I didn't, but obviously it looked just like Black&Tan's pic he posted except with the labels still on. Just an FYI, I had them both (low-profile and the full-size) placed on the truck at the same time to try to get a better idea of how they would look on the truck and their differences, along with also doing extensive looking and measuring with them next to each other on the floor of the shop. The full-size one sits about 2 inches higher over the top of the bed rail. It sits slightly (an inch at the absolute most) lower in the bed, and the part that's in the bed is wider so that it actually almost touches the bed rails, instead of the little bit of space between the bed rails and the box in the low-profile one that you can notice in one of my pictures. The other difference is that on the full-size the locks are on the outside. I was worried when I was trying to decide between the two that the low-profile one might not have as much space as I need. I was dead wrong, probably from a combination of the looks being a little deceiving and just the fact that I can be a bad judge of things like that. I keep a bunch of stuff in there (a few tool bags, boots, extra pair of tennis shoes, rope, basketball, weight vest, camelbak, first aid kit, etc), and I've never been able to fill it completely because it seems no matter how much stuff I throw in there there is still room. So unless you need it to carry an enormous amount of stuff, a low-profile one might suit you just fine.

thanks for the info cegan, and thanks B&T for the pic.

I'm on the fence and cannot decide which size I want. Both look good. I thought the full size might look to big, but it actually looks pretty darn good. I do want a black one, but man I cannot decide on which size.

I'm not sure if you live near a store that actually has a supply of them, but if you have to get a store to order it like I did, you could ask if they could possibly ship both so it would be easier for you to decide. The Fastenal store I ended up ordering mine from got both shipped to them so that I could decide, at no extra cost to me. I doubt many stores would be so nice, but it's worth a shot. Good luck and let us know what you decide

So I finally pulled the trigger on the full size. I installed it, but those J hooks don't really grab onto anything of substance, they seem to just curl under the plastic bed rail covers. Is that how it is supposed to be? It does seem very secure (secure from a keep it in case in an accident sense).

I am looking at low side boxes. I wouldn't be taking them on/off regularly but, perhaps occassionally. Do they come on/off easily? Doesn't look like it from the install instructions. Looks like they bolt to the rail and floor. I suppose if it was easy to take on/off it would get stolen easily too.
