Disappointed with LEER cap

I am copying a thread by sozzy1269 because I didn't want to hijack his. I need some advice here. I have written a letter to Leer which I will paste below. What do you guys think I should do or expect from Leer?

Sorry its a bit long...
================================================== ======
Dear Leer:

I am now a 4 time purchaser of Leer products: 1 tonneau and 3 caps. I regret to say that the one I just received will be my last, and I want you to know why.

I recently purchased a new Ford truck and within 2 days was at Holly Acres in Woodbridge, VA to order the cap. Three weeks later it arrived and I had it installed (SN: PA9999999). When it was installed it was pretty dirty but I was able to wash it a couple of days later. When I washed it I discovered a problem with the paint, or more specifically the clear coat. I called Holly Acres and had some difficulty in getting someone to schedule removing the cap to ship it back. I made one appointment and left work early only to find out the person who had to inspect the paint wasn't working that day. I rescheduled. The second day I was able to get the cap removed to ship back to you. I can understand things happen, and I am ok with having to ship it back to have the paint fixed. Maybe it was damaged in shipping or when it was being installed.

While the cap was off I installed a tailgate lock which required me to interface with the wiring installed for the cap, and found myself looking at the wiring under the truck. The wiring that was installed to connect the cap was certainly less than professional and did not reflect the quality product that I thought I was purchasing. There was one wire leading from the battery to the back of the truck for a constant 12v. It started out as a red wire with an in-line fuse holder. Right after the fuse holder it was connected to a black wire with a crimp connector. A few feet later it was again crimp connected, this time to a blue wire, and then eventually crimp connected back to a red wire. Four separate colors and 3 crimp connectors to get this one wire to the back of the truck. In the process it was wound around the OEM wiring harness, laid across brake lines, and generally strung the way it was easiest to run. The wiring in the back of the truck that connected to the cap was five separate connectors and a lot of excess wiring electrical taped into a bundle. I left the wiring alone until I got the cap back.

The cap arrived two weeks after it was shipped back and I again had to schedule another appointment to get it reinstalled. I was told they still needed a couple of hours to put back the clamps and reconnect the wiring, and it would be another week before they could schedule me. This time they sprayed it off and let me look at it before reinstalling and I didn't see any problem with the paint. They finished up in less than an hour and I took it home. I immediately removed the installed wiring and rewired the cap. I put the wiring in protective wire loom as Ford does. I wrapped it in electrical tape as that is the closest I can get to the wrapping Ford uses. And I put the wiring back in following the Ford wiring harness. Although I am sure wrapping wiring around brake lines to hold it up is a professional job in some people's eyes, it isn't in mine. Once I had the wiring back to the cap I replaced the various connectors with a simple 9 ways Molex connector that I picked up for $4 at a local electronics shop. All of the original connectors are now gone and I have a single plug for everything. The wiring is cut to length and there isn't 3 feet of extra wire wadded up and electrical taped together. Finally I had to cover some of the wiring between the lights on the ceiling. When I first had the cap installed they took over 4 hours to complete the job. I was told it took that long because some of the wiring in the cap was done backwards. I assume all of the wire taps used on the lights and the wiring that was left exposed was because the original wiring was done incorrectly at the factory. Now the wiring is exposed in some places but covered by the liner in others. Some of the liner is tightly secured to the cap and some hangs away from it loosely.

I really do not understand what happened between my purchasing a cap in 2004 and this one but something has gone horribly wrong. Your quality is way down and I certainly did not expect the lack of support or workmanship from Holly Acres. I really thought Leer was a name I could trust, and that Holly Acres was the best option for me. Unfortunately I believe I was wrong on both counts.

I don’t know what you do when customers inform you of issues but I can assure you that neither Leer nor Holly Acres will continue receive my recommendation. I cannot continue, in good conscience, to tell people I am satisfied with either.

Sincerely,
Me

Damn, I thought I had issues... Sounds like the installer "holly acres" really did a hack job...They should have noticed if anything was wrong with the wiring from the get go and had it fixed at the factory when the cap was went back for the paint.

My Leer cap was alright as far as paint goes. But I was not happy with my wiring either. I as found that there are inconsitant gaps alone the bed rail... as if they dont have the box contour right. I think it looks good though.

In the pic you can see the big gap at the front, tapper down next to nothing over the wheel wells then open back up

I have not yet done anything about the wiring. But it looked like a child strung it alone the side of the frame just over and under the factory loomed harness. Pretty shady job. Too much time has lapsed since I had mine done, so I dont think going to the installers is going to do anything now.

PS thats the first Blue flame I have seen with the colored Tow mirrors... I like!!!!!

Why can't people just take a little pride in the work they do anymore. Then this short of thing wouldn't happen.

Because nobody taught them or they just don't care.

Maybe they will take note and police their dealer network a little better in the future. All they can really control is the quality of their product though...

When I ordered my leer 800 it also had paint issues, but that is probably because leer sends it on uncovered trucks and it was covered in bird ****.

Well this is not good news to hear but I am sure from time to time a bad one gets out the door. I am suppose to pick my Leer up on Friday. Ordered the same shell as F ast and I see the gaps and wow that gap looks big in the front. I will have to look at it before they put it on the truck for paint and quality and if it does not look good I will not accept it. I am pretty picky so I will look over the install wiring if we get that far. The local Leer dealer seems pretty decent, they told me that they look the shell over for quality issues prior to calling the customer for an install appointment so I am hoping to not have any problems.

Sorry I just saw this thread. I ordered a top of the line Leer cap for my Platinum. After I ordered it I was concerned about the paint match. However when it came in the paint matched fairly well. I could live with it. Once the thing was installed, it fit like crap. There was about two inches of the bed rail cap showing on the front right side. The bottom of the cap fit right against the side of the truck on the right, and was about 1/2 inch away on the left. I could fit my fingers up between the side of the truck and the bottom of the shell on the left side. I told the installing dealer I was unhappy with the fit. He blamed the truck. Told him he had two options. Either give me all my money back or take the cap off and send it back to Leer. He sent the thing back to Leer. He called me two weeks later and said Leer looked at the cap and could find nothing wrong with it. They test fit it on another 2010 truck and it fit fine. Then he said he related to them how upset I was, and they will build me a whole new shell. Based on his word usage on the phone, I don't believe a word. He called me today and said he has the new cap at his shop. I have an appointment at 0800 hours tomorrow for the install. Hope it goes better this time. I'm still skeptical.

^^ get some pics up when you get it on! I'm getting reay to order a Leer 100xq for my truck. I have never had anything but good luck with Leer. Usually its the dealers that are unpredictable. And you can't just sit a shell on a truck and expect it to line up perfectly with out using some shims.

Yea. Well, I told him the first time I just wanted it to fit the same all the way around. I didn't think I was being too demanding. Just make it the same all the way around. My last truck had a Stockland top. It fit fine with only some padded tape. This dealer put about four inches of foam tape on the side of the truck to try and shim the thing without luck. I will post pictures if I can figure out how to do that.

Gotta say, the ARE I got may not have matched in color, but the fit is spot on...
