I had a leer 100r on my 08 f350 short bed and it fit good on the sides but did not fit the tailgate at all and rain leaked in around all the windows. It was so fogged up most of the time you could never see through it. I also had it carpeted and they had glue all over the place and you couldn't get it off. I will never own another leer product, and the dealer I bought it from said "its a pickup, don't worry about it, the beds are made to get wet! " Only good thing I can say is the silver matched my truck spot on.

I have a raider cap, the finished product wasn't without it's con's either.

It over hanges over the plastic bedcap by just a hair, and it rubbed a streak of paint off on both sides.

Wouldn't have knoticed if my cap was a permanent fixture, but I always take it on and off as I need too.

I spent from 0800 to 1330 hrs at the Leer dealer. Leer made me a new shell after I sent back the first one. The installing dealer said if I did not like it he would give me my money back. He also said Leer would not let him return this one. He said they took extra care building this one, and test fit it on a truck prior to sending it to him. He stated Leer felt it was within their "standards of fit." I checked the serial number and it really is a new shell. I thought they would actually send back the old one and see if I notice. The dealer said he would give me my money back and just put the shell in his stock.

We put the shell on the truck. It fits better. On a scale of one to ten, the first shell fit at a 3. This new shell fits in the 6 range. It still has a gap on the lower edge at the right front. You can see the black plastic bed cap under the shell. The rest of the shell fits acceptably. The dealer ground down the fiberglass on the right front and made it fit a little tighter, but still not as good as it could be.

The only thing I am pleased with, and I do mean the ONLY thing, is the paint match. It is very good. The whole paint job seems good. I hope it holds up. I find the windows flimsy and the hardware is outdated. The configuration of the rear window bottom seal could be better.

I drove away with the shell on the truck. I really need a camper shell. I want a bakflip. I don't have more time to waste on this.

This is supposed to be the flagship of the Leer camper shell line. I'd really like to talk face-to-face with someone from the Leer factory and have them tell me this is what they would consider a true representation of their abilities. I doubt they would take this truck and shell to a show as a display of their product line.

The bottom line: Buy a Snugtop. It's gotta be better.

Get some pics on Hiddenmickey!! Did you say you got the 100xq? I'd really like to see it on your truck! I'm gonna go ahead and take my chances and order a Leer. This will be the 4th shell I've had from them and I have to say the past 3 were perfect. (knock on wood!)

This is the gap on the front, from the first shell: Name: IMG_1345-1.jpg

This is the gap on the second shell, after they ground down the underside of the shell(ignore the man behind the curtain): Name: IMG_1374.jpg

So the last two are the rear corners from the first shell. Told them I didn't care about a gap, I just wanted it the same on both sides. I am very happy with the paint match overall. You can tell it is a different color in some angles, but mostly you can't notice. Hope it all fades at the same rate.

I got my Leer 100XL installed last Friday. My gaps on the side are a little more then dissapointing but overall the shell is better then the last brand that I had. The color match is very good for Tux. Black. I wish mine fit along the sides as well as yours does. It just seems like none of the camper shell manufactures do a good job any more but they love to charge alot for these things.

Did you ever think that maybe the people or machines assembling the truck dont do it the exact same way everytime. I know most truck cap compnaies will mold a cap and then use that mold for awhile. Maybe the person putting on the bed rails goofed up some but it was within Fords standards. While it was within Ford's standards maybe then leer messes up a little bit too. Now two places have messed up slightly but within tolerable specs so now this causes the problems. Truck caps & bed covers are an aftermarket accessory not a factory one.

GOOD LOOKING truck hiddenmickey. Too bad companies don't take pride in their work, China could make the same quality for half the price.

Oh Ya!! Hiddenmickey that is the absolute best looking shell for the Fords. I cannot wait untill mine comes in. Those gaps don't look bad at all. Very nice looking truck.

I get the whole truck is built in one place by manufacturer A and shell is built by manufacturer B in another. Truck is built by robots with laser alignment but steel will warp, nothing is perfect. Fiberglass uses a mold that will deform over time due to the heat produced during the curing process, again nothing is perfect. Years ago I worked on fiberglass boat repair and now I work as an marine engineer/designer with all the spec stuff that goes along with that. Not an expert but enough knowledge to know over 1/2 inch over hang on one side ( I can fit my fingers up between the side of the truck and the shell) and 1/4 inch on the other is not a quality fit. Molds are expensive and time consuming to make correctly and fiberglass companies are inclined to use them untill the complaints start to come in about part fits. Just my thoughts when I made my post.

It is too hard to tell from the pictures of the first shell. On the first one, the shell fit absolutely snug on the passenger side, and I could fit my fingers up between the side of the truck and the side of the shell on the driver side. One back corner sat on top of the bed rail, and the opposite side overlapped by about 1/4 inch. There was an inch and a half of the plastic bed rail showing on the right front with the first shell.

The second shell has its problems, but at least fits about the same all the way around.

I had two people measure my truck bed to make sure it was square and level. One person I had measure, has a certification from the state and measures things for a living. He is pretty accurate. He said the truck was not far off. It seemed to prove it by the mounting of the second shell which fit better right off the bat. The second shell only required a massive amount of grinding on the underside (right front corner) to make it sit down. It looks good in photos though. 50K miles from now I won't be able to tell the difference anyway.

Glad to hear you are happy with your new shell. Mine is the same as your first one, snug on the passengers side and I can fit my hand under the drivers side.

jcleek,
I live near you and have a 2009 with a Leer cap. I have only had this rig for a couple of weeks but by all appearances I like what I have. The truck and cap came out of Massachusetts so Holly Acres has never touched it and I am glad that you have forewarned me as now they will probably never get any business of mine.

Maybe if they can't police themselves, loosing a little business will help them work on their quality...

Just an update that I have heard NOTHING back from Leer. Surprise, surprise.
