Really bad paint - anyone else have it?
Really bad paint - anyone else have it?
2010 XLT Supercrew in Black.
Each time I wash it, I find more and more defects in the paint. There's tons of 'orange peel'. There are a couple of spots on the bottom lip of the tail gate that look like runs. There are a few 'splatters' - very tiny but there none-the-less - on the hood. There's a section of the bed on the side behind the rear bumper that seems to be missing paint completely.
I don't expect perfection, and I've owned several black cars so I know how it emphasizes imperfections - but this a bit crazy. The section behind the bumper in addition to the 'runs' on the tail gate almost make me think it's been repaired (only had 100 miles on it when I purchased it new), but the rest of the paint is bad, too - so I guess it's fine.
I washed my truck and our 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe (black, too - and not exactly know for stellar paint). The paint on the Santa Fe is soo much smoother and cleaner than the Ford, despite almost 4 years of wear and tear. Makes me nervous that the finish will hold up on the Ford.
Anyone else have these issues?

I also have the tuxedo black and the only imperfections I've found are on the front bottom corners of the box where it meets the cab. It's like there's a section about 3"x1" of what appears to be a cluster of the glass particles they put in the paint. It's rough to the touch and you can definitely notice it if you look for it but that's all I've found after hand washing it a few times now.
i noticed some less than perfect spots on mine the day i got it. roughness, what looks like touched up rockchips on the tailgate, excess clearcoat. if i hadnt bought it with 18 miles on the odometer i would have been suspicious of a repaint. theres deffinately some quality control issues with the f150s, but they are still the best trucks out there in my opininon.
2010 XLT Tuxedo Black w/Silver Ingot. I've noticed no flaws on mine. So far this is the only vehicle I've ever bought with absolutely no complaints or reason to take it back to the dealer.
First off, most of the roughness or bumps (usually on the rocker panels) is railroad dust. When the trucks are transported via train, they pick up a lot of that rail dust and it gets into the paint. Second, the orange peel is present on most non-luxury vehicles. It varies in degree, most is mostly attributable to the drying agent the apply to the paint in order to make it cure faster. Orange peel can be removed if you want to take the time to wet sand and buff the paint, but it's a chore and would need to be re-cleared after you sand/buff.
Luxury vehicles like Lincolns, Jags, Lexus, Mercedes, etc go through an in-house wetsand process to remove the orange peel. Different price range gets different results.

This definitely isn't rail dust. And I realize some orange peel is normal, but this truck has a lot more than I'm used to seeing - and I don't buy expensive cars.
I'll try to take some pictures later today to show what I'm talking about.
On repaints - I thought they had to disclose any repaired damage on new vehicles. Wasn't BMW sued over not doing that a few years back?

Sort of a side-comment. My understanding has always been that when a vehicle is re-painted, it decreases the value of said vehicle dramatically. So I certainly would not be happy if I thought I just bought a brand-new vehicle only to find out it had been repainted.
Here are some pics:
"Run" on the tailgate:

Missing paint behind bumper - I assume the reddish stuff showing through is primer? :

Orange Peel - hard to photo properly, especially when there's pollen everywhere - but hopefully this shows it well enough for comparison:

I know they asked me if the truck I was trading in had ever been repainted, so I assume it has to impact value negatively.
How the heck could they miss the paint behind the bumper? That's hard to miss.
And the drips too. That sucks. Hopefully you can get it fixed or do something so it doesn't bother you. Ford doesn't seem keen on replacing a vehicle for anyone, even though for most of us it's a huge dollar outlay and we expect perfection when buying brand-new instead of pre-owned. I know in my business we ALWAYS take care of the customer, strange that the auto industry has such a huge stigma of never doing what's necessary to satisfy their customers, soon as the money is in their pockets and the paperwork is signed.
