stopped by the dealer and they agreed that it didn't look like it should. The Service Manager looked and said it appeared to be a factory defect as there wasn't any other sign of damage or indications that anything had been replaced or removed. The Salesguy stated they were a 'full disclosure' dealership and would report any damage to a truck prior to sale. The only issue is this truck was a dealer transfer (not at my request) so I guess it's conceivable it could have been damaged at the original dealer. FWIW - I'm pretty comfortable with this dealer and don't think they'd intentionally try and screw me.

It's supposed to be evaluated by Ford and the body shop sometime next week. They said they'd do what it took to make me happy. We'll see how it turns out. Can't say I'm too happy now - I bought new instead of used specifically to avoid having to deal with things like this.

After seeing those pictures I would hope Ford or the other dealer would step up to the plate and let you know what really happened. That is terrible & I hope they make it right for you. Good luck and hopefully somebody will make it right for you.

How long have you owned the truck?

I have a Tuxedo Black FX2 and I just washed it for the first time today. I did not feel or see any thing out of the ordinary. Found a scratch though but used the Turtle wax swirl and scratch remover and it worked great. I need to throw another coat on it but thats my OCD. You can only see it now if you are less than 4 inches away from it. It took me almost 2 hours to wash as well. Gotta take my time in the hot sun down here is Key West. But while giving the truck a bath it made me realize how awesome this color is. Sorry to hear about your paint job. Looks like they are gonna get it squared away for ya. Hope all goes well!

Here's my results, without sanding or compounded. But I did use a very mild polish and wax.

I bought the truck in February - so I've had it about 2 months and have less than 2,000 miles on it. I noticed the orange peel day one. Noticed the 'missing' paint a few weeks ago, but have been out of town with work and vacation and just now had a chance to try and rectify the issue.

The spot on the tailgate isn't a ding. I think the 'hole' in it is a result of too thick paint cracking/blistering.

I'll post back with results on how things go. I do expect it to be fixed to my satisfaction, and I'm kind of picky.

Black painted vehicles are so unforgiving when it comes to hiding mistakes, defects and imperfections.

I hope you get the problems resolved to your satisfaction.

Each time I wash it, I find more and more defects in the paint. There's tons of 'orange peel'. There are a couple of spots on the bottom lip of the tail gate that look like runs. There are a few 'splatters' - very tiny but there none-the-less - on the hood. There's a section of the bed on the side behind the rear bumper that seems to be missing paint completely.

I don't expect perfection, and I've owned several black cars so I know how it emphasizes imperfections - but this a bit crazy. The section behind the bumper in addition to the 'runs' on the tail gate almost make me think it's been repaired (only had 100 miles on it when I purchased it new), but the rest of the paint is bad, too - so I guess it's fine.

I washed my truck and our 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe (black, too - and not exactly know for stellar paint). The paint on the Santa Fe is soo much smoother and cleaner than the Ford, despite almost 4 years of wear and tear. Makes me nervous that the finish will hold up on the Ford.

Anyone else have these issues?

Yes, just got a 2013 and have the same issue, but it is covered under warrantee, They took it and are giving it a full new paint job. depending on where you live with the laws it is covered. Check your lemon laws for your state.

Be careful what you ask for - because you're about to get boned big time. (Full Disclosure: I used to run the painting operation for a rather large manufacturing operation, so I know a bit about paint and painting processes.)

The reason you're about to get boned is that no dealership can or will be able to paint your truck and have the paint performance (appearance, gloss, corrosion resistance, etc.) come out even close to factory specifications. They simply do not have the equipment or process control.

Second, the factory painted your truck when it was what's called a "body in white." That means is was a freshly assembled body shell with nothing on it. Your paint job will be done in a body shop with no process control and they will simply scuff sand, mask and shoot the truck. If you don't think anybody with half an eye will be able to tell that the truck was painted, you're dreaming. (Anywhere they mask will show.) Oh, and a re-painted truck is worth significantly less at re-sale time.

Third, you'd better hope the re-paint does not show up on a Carfax report. It shouldn't, but I've seen some stuff that folks tried to hide still show up there.

When I had a bad paint job on my 1995 Ford F-150, they offered to re-paint the whole truck after only a short discussion. When I asked the Body Shop Manager (right in front of the General Manager) if he could guarantee that his paint job would meet all factory specs, not be detectable and have no masking lines, overspray, etc. he quickly (and sheepishly) said he couldn't do it - for the exact reasons I stated above. I demanded - and eventually got Trade Assistance for - a new truck.

I have purchased a 1995, 2001, 2007 and a 2011 F150 brand new, and my 2011 has the most orange peel and uneven paint of the four. I had two bubbles like that under the paint on my driver side door sill and had it corrected under warranty.

I have a Tuxedo Black '13 and have noticed some orange peel in it as well as the Race Red 2012 I had. Not really sure but it's safe to say IMO the paint quality on new vehicles has gone down. Actually had to have my 13 passenger door repainted and blended with other door and fender due to bare metal scratches at the bottom of the door with clear coat over them from factory. I will say Ford did take care of it finally but again.... Quality the first time would be great.

Fisher, I'd never let them repaint the entire truck, for the reasons stated above.

Never repaint major body panels unless you absolutely have to (accident)

BTW, if you want to see what an average dealer repaint job looks like, just go back to the pics posted by the OP.

To give you an idea how and why you'll never get a decent repaint job at any dealer, consider this. Take your truck to a few really, really good Paint Shops. (And I'm not talking Collision Shops - but shops that specialize in custom paint.) Get a few quotes on what it would cost to have them repaint your truck so that nobody can easily tell it was painted. Now go back to your dealer and ask them how much Ford is giving them to repaint your truck.

I'm going to guess that a really decent paint job (same color) will run you at least $8,000 - $10,000. Most of that cost will be disassembling your whole truck to avoid masking lines and overspray. I'd be willing to bet that Ford will give your dealer about $3,000. They won't even pay to remove the F-150 logos on your front fenders. They'll just mask around them. Get my drift here?
