Oil and mileage between changes-help please

Hey guys. Let me start by saying that I've got a 2010 Lariat Supercrew 4x4. I hit 7200 miles today and figured while I was close to a Valvoline I would get an oil change. The manual recommends an oil change every 7500 miles. The guy told me that I should use a synthetic blend, I went with the conventional. He then told me that the manual says 7500 miles between changes but that is assuming that I use a full synthetic. He said I should go no longer than 3000 miles on conventional. I know these guys are in the business of selling oil changes so I'm a little skeptical of his "advice". What do you guys do? Is conventional ok to use? Can I run it 7500 miles on conventional or should I be using a synthetic? Any help you can give me from experience would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot. Adam

This type of question is asked on here pretty much once a week. If you want to spend the rest of eternity reading opinions do a search and you will find more than you could possibly ask for.

For my opinion, you should be using Motorcraft 5w-20 Semi-Synthetic with a Motorcraft Filter like the manual specifies. Using anything else could potentially give ford a reason to deny a warranty claim on the engine. I would also tie the 7500 mile interval to the semi-synthetic oil. The extra modifiers will keep the oil stable for the 7500 miles.

The only way to know if the convectional oil will be OK to 7500 miles is to have it tested every couple thousand by a lab. The cost of that will easily use up the savings of using the conventional oil.

Oh no, not another oil change question.

Welcome to the site but a simple search will definitely have pages and pages of answers.

Thanks guys, and sorry for the repetitive post. I have done some searching and still have not found the answer that I'm looking for. Is it okay to use conventional, or is it just a dumb idea. Please bear with me. This is my first Ford, first new vehicle, first warranty to deal with, and I just want to make sure that I am doing everything right. Since I had them put conventional in today, is it bad enough that I should take it back tomorrow and have them put the blend in? Or am I cool for 3000 or so and just have them put in the blend next time? Again, sorry, but I have done some searching in the last 20 minutes or so and can't find anything addressing this issue. If I am missing something on the search feature please point that out to me too and I would be more than happy to keep searching. Again, thanks for any help that you could give.

Hello.

Quit searching - yer answer is in POST #2. https://www.f150online.com/forums/4158619-post2.html

IF you decided to truly search ( and I'm assuming you are actually leveraging the Advanced Search function and not just 'browsing') you would have discovered by now that the overwhelming majority states the same as ...POST #2.

i would stick with the conventional for 3k, then switch back to the motorcraft blend. Some guys will sill change their motorcraft blend before 7500, depending on how the truck is driven. Up to 7500miles is what you should think it as.

Thanks to you guys who are trying to help me. I appreciate the advice. I'm just going to run the conventional for the next 3000 miles then switch to the blend that is recommended.

If anyone else has nothing better to do than dog me for being new, asking a question, and not knowing how to properly use the search function, knock yourself out. You're obviously a bigger annd better man than I am.

I was just at the dealer today for a customer meet and greet and that question was asked and answered by the service manager and he said "You can use any oil brand or type you want as long as it is 5w20" It does not have to be synthetic.

Oh grow up, sir!

Here - I was busy looking for you while you were whining. I can't see, I'm old and feeble, and I can only type so fast with one functional finger

In Advanced Search - username = Labnerd, term = oil

You'll find the same results without the username, but this just helps filter it some ...

Lastly - if you had followed the good advice that's right in yer OWNER's MANUAL, you wouldn't be in this frappin' predicament in the first place, hmmm? No excuse....

Will there be anything else, sir? Here - cheer up. lol

Hello !

While true - it's almost impossible to find a better oil, regardless of price, than MC semi-synth 5w-20. ~$3/quart at Wallymart.

Hence - no reason NOT to use it. It's grat, AND it's cheap.

That one linky to Labnerd's post on that score is compelling.

Just stay away from Non-EP Mobil 1

I'm still trying to figure out why someone with a BRAND NEW truck would take it to a Valvoline shop to get the oil changed. They're the clowns that put the confusion in your day.

Why not take it to the dealer?

I can see why he went to Valvoline, because it often takes forever to get an oil change at the dealer. If he lives in a city, the dealers are very busy. I've used Valvoline or Kwik Lube for past vehicles, I have had no problems, the oil changes are done in 15 minutes are less and there is one of each 5 minutes away from my house. That is hard to beat. That said, I'll be going to the dealer with my new F-150, as I have the maintenance plan that covers oil changes. I'll just have to plan some time.

abiggs,

To answer your original question, I used valvoline 5W20 conventional in my 2003 and 2006 F-150s, two previous Mustangs and a Chrysler and I had no issues with any of them. But, I always changed the oil every 3000 miles. On my first 2010 F-150, I changed the oil every 5000 with conventional and it was fine.
