I think its due to the awd transfer case and also perhaps load limit of large wheels.

 

The Platinum also has AWD, but there is no mention in the manual of similiar limitations in towing capacity to the HD, so it must be those 22" wheels that make the difference. The Platinum can be got with 20's but I don't think they are big enough to hamper the tow rating.

I had a Nissan Armada and the same topic always came up whenever someone put any wheels 22"+ on them.

 

The Lighting had heavy tow ratings and special suspension especially in 03-04. Not sure why the Harley is lower. I am sure Ford specs a strong wheel. I had 20's on my F250 factory they were super strong I think Alcoa made them for Ford. Maybe it is due to a lowered reduced spring capacity.

 

So would it be unrealistic to expect this truck to pull a 7500+ LB toyhauler on Highways a few times a year without experiencing any major problems?

 

I would not use any half ton to pull a 7500+ pound toy hauler.

 

The platinum does not have AWD. Thats only a option in the HD as far as i know.

Also i use a platinum to pull my 7500 daily. It feels better than towing with our F250 SD. Quiter, smoother, more comfortable and more controlled. Makes me feel much safer towing.

And even a Max tow package payload levels is borderline for most people/toy hauler combos.

 

The HD Truck does have the 5.4 Motor 3.73 Axle combo and came with Electronic Tow Brakes the only difference seems to be the wheel and tire combo. Which take the rating from 11200 to 5100 which seems like a lot.

 

Here is the Sticker I sent Ford an email about it and they referred me to my dealer, since I didn't purchase from a local dealer I was going to go talk to a mechanic at one of the local Ford dealers to see what they say.

it has the 7050# GVWR Package as well as Trailer Tow Package Trailer Sway Controls and like I mentioned the Trailer Brake Controler. When I spoked to a salesman friend he was a bit shocked at the limmited tow capacity. It's certainly a beautiful truck which i don't want to damage. But I would like the ability to pull some fun along with me if it is possible.

 

What does your driver's door/B-pilar Tire and Loading sticker say for payload? My guess is less than 1000 pounds, maybe 700 pounds. GVWR of 7050 is less than any other Supercrew 5.4L 4WD @ 7200 pounds. That will be the limiting factor. So, maybe the springs are different.

What toy hauler model are you looking at?

I can get a 2008 30FPS Adventure RPM Extreme Toy Hauler for a rediculously low price.
Its numbers are Dry 7000/ Max 10,000
The only thing I would really plan on putting in it is my 2009 VRSCF which comes in at about 640 pounds.

 

My 2010 4wd HD has a payload of 999 lbs and front and rear gawr same as above.
