USDOT rules for my truck

Ok guys i need some info about if my trailer and truck combo come under any USDOT rules. Most of you know my truck but it weights about 7klbs max and my trailer has a GVRW of about 7klbs also. Do i fall under any of the USDOT rules when towing this trailer? Want to be sure as im trying to sort all my insurance and buisness stuff out.

If you are involved in Interstate Commerce and your combined GVW is greater than 10001 lbs you fall under the USDOT regs. Google FMCSA 390.5 for further info.

Barritia, I think you previously stated you live in Virginia.

A couple issues to look at.

Does your state have personal/passenger plates and commercial for business?

If so, how much weight do you have the truck tagged for 7,8, 10,000 lbs, like a larger commercial truck?

You do not move/transport a product, it is a contractor tool and equipment trailer.

You need to talk to the Va. dept that takes care of vehicle registrations first, and a trusted auto insurance person second.

A question to ask yourself is, if your were stopped by a Va. trooper or Va. DOT officer at a weigh station etc., what weight class is on your vehicle registration. The answer if a commercial vehicle would be tagged high enough for your trucks GCWR in what you pull and pickup weighs and not to exceed what the truck factory GVW & GCWR are.

One other question. In our area the bridges like to bang you for trucks higher tolls and will ask to see your registration to make you pay like a large six wheel box type truck instead of a pickup. Would they agree with you?

The whole thing can get very sticky if you try the easy way and have a real issue or accident and the questions come after the fact and you say I did not know.

Sorry it was long. Good luck.

Thanks MG5ford yes im in Va. which from what i can make out has no rule on this but it's very confuseing. I dont travel across state lines and i use my truck and trailer for work but neither is registered as commercial use. Bout have private plates.

All i can find on the VA site is this

Virginia

Interstate: Follows Federal Regulation Part 390.21.

Intrastate: All,for Hire, CMVs over 10,000 pounds must display the name
and address of the operating motor carrier on both sides of the power unit.

You do not need a DOT number.
