The good news is it sounds like a cleanliness problem and not a paint problem.

I used to work at a foreign car dealership, so we had cars coming in from all across the world basically. Some of them were absolutely littered with the "freckles" aka rail dust. A quality clay bar, and some quick detailer spray is the best bet to remove it. Just do yourself a favor, cut the clay bar in half or thirds when you get it, and put the unused portion back in the container...because you WILL DROP IT. And once it hits the ground, even for a split second...it is junk, so no point in blowing $20+ on an entire claybar when you can get away with using a half or third of one (depending on the size you like to work with). I have tried many different kinds, mothers, adams, megs, etc...and I went back for more adams. They are all pretty similar in quality, but I liked the adams with their quick detailer spray the best.

Hello, I just noticed the rust spots on my 09, kinda look like freckles. I am reading about rail dust, but what is it and how did it get on my truck?

Do you think I should i take it to the dealer or try fixing myself? I don't want to damage the paint job.

Thanks, Bob

I've never had that issue, but I assume it is rust dust that spits up from the train wheels/tracks as your truck is transported across the states from where it was built. Ever look at some train tracks or the wheels on a train? Always completely covered in rust - those conductors just don't take pride in washing, waxing and polishing like we do.

On a side note, perhaps Obama's bullet trains will be spotless & shiny, finally eliminating that issue. Then again, if it's just passenger trains, maybe not. Never mind they won't actually go across the entire country and actually be very useful as it is.

i noticed those spots in spring after the winter season, the only thing i can think it is from is road salt/sand. I just use the Mr. Clean Magic eraser and it comes right off....

My 10 Scew (black), when I picked it up from the dealer, it was loaded with junk. I first tried to scrub it off, no luck. Then used a clay bar and it worked prefectly. I am still miffed at my dealer for selling me a truck which was not prepped correctly.

Perhaps Ford will start using the ultrasound tested paint they use on the 2010 Taurus on the F-150 at some point in the near future?

This happens to ALL vehicles. It's just the most noticeable on white trucks. Same thing happened to mine when new. I freaked out just as everyone does. Then I realized it was only rail dust and it comes right out with the use of a clay bay.

It's just tiny slivers of metal that get stuck in the clear coat. Eventually, they start to rust. It has nothing to do with the paint or the sheet metal on the truck.

This is completely common and nothing to worry about. Clay the truck every spring and you'll be all set.

Keeping a good coat of wax on the truck at all times also helps a ton.

Also, do not listen to "shotgunz"
