Finally happy with my Nav.

I had my 8120 moved from my 06 FX4 to my 09 FX4.
When I first had it done we used a Metra dash kit. I was not happy with the result.

I think the Metra was made with the OEM nav in mind. The frame makes the stock size nav look like an afterthought.

I ordered the Scosche faceplate on Ebay but was disappointed to find it had the matte finish as well. I took it to the local body shop and asked them if they could spray it when they were painting a black vehicle. This is the result:

It looks awesome compared to the first kit I used.

I am thinking about getting the Harley trim for inside the cab to replace the silver dash trim. I saw one on the weekend and it looks awesome.

Much improved. I sure miss my kenwood. The nav portion is much better than the factory nav.

Thanks.
The Garmin nav that is in the Kenwood is the best that I have seen. I use it for work and it never lets me down.

You guys do realise that Navteq makes the map packs for garmin as well as Ford and many other GPS devices. I have used many over the years and to be honest they all did the same thing. Got me to wear i was going. I do like the way the Ford system works over the others though. Mainly because of the travel link software.

The kenwood is just much easier to use. You can quickly type in a city and get the mileage and eta. With ford you have to enter a house number, street, city, state. Also the kenwood gives you elevation which I used a lot.

Don't get me wrong. Overall I do prefer my factory unit, but the nav portion is inferior to the kenwood regardless of who drew the maps.

Another option would be to have the same paint shop paint your silver dash trim gloss black. Did they paint the dash kit with enough quality for that to work? It might be cheaper too.

I thought of that as well. I will get a price for both.

Does your Sync still work?
What harness kits did you use?
Steering wheel adapter?

I'm trying to do the same, but I dont know what harnesses and adapters to get. Part#'s would be very helpful!! Thanks!

They have adapters for all of the options. With my head unit I don't need sync and I don't have wheel controls.
