Buying a new truck.....Maybe!!
Buying a new truck.....Maybe!!
New to the forum, my first post. Lots of interesting info on here for sure. I'm in discussions with my local dealer over a 2010 F-150 XLT with the XTR package. MSRP is 45,200. Ford Canada is offering $5000 off the truck, but the dealer is not offering anything else off it.
I'm looking to trade a vehicle, that I will be taking a fair size loss on, which I'm OK with. I'm terrible at negotiating prices on vehicles. I hate buying a new vehicle.
I talked to another dealer in Nova Scotia today and he advised that sales are slow and they are offering another $3500 off that truck, but they won't take my trade.
I don't need a truck until the spring, but I made the mistake of driving one, now I got the itch to get it.
Anyone have any advice on negotiating with the dealer.
Thanks

Do you know anyone who can get your truck on A Plan? Sure takes the sting out of what the dealer wants to soak you on your trade. Here in Ontario the dealers don't seem too bad on trade ins but it's still a far cry from retail. The dealer I work with offered me $10000 on my mint 2003 Supercrew. I turned them down and was walking out the door and they came up to $12000 just like that. I still went home and sold the truck privately 2 days later for $14500. Time is on your side if you don't want a new one until spring so maybe try selling it yourself. You might have to put up with a few A Holes but a few thousand $ more is worth it.

I don't know how it works in Canada, but around here in the eastern US, there is quite a bit of negotiating room.
I went from the same as you when I bought - $4K rebate off the sticker and that was it - to getting an additional $4500 off after 2 weeks of research and shopping.
I hope you can do better than just the rebate - I know you want that truck!

You have to understand it's a simple game between you and the dealer. And the dealer doesn't want the truck, but wants your money. You want to minimize the money you forfeit to get the truck.
The easiest way is to shop around different dealers for new truck price and trade-in value for your truck. Keep the two numbers separate. Consider the price you can reasonable expect to receive for a private sale of your truck. Deduct from this figure some costs for repair/touch-up to make your trade-in desirable in a private transaction and deduct the forfeiture of the sales tax savings for not trading in against the new truck.
Call up the dealer with the lowest new truck price. Mention other dealers have shown interest in selling you a new truck and taking your trade-in (if you decide not to sell privately). Lower the new truck sales price and raise your trade-in. Tell him you are waiting to hear back from a couple of other dealers and will be buying today if you get the price you want. Hang up the phone. Call the 2nd lowest dealer..... You get the picture.
Find out the dealer's cost for the truck you want and get as close to the dealers cost as you can. Likewise, find the true trade-in and private sale value for your current ride and get the dealer closer to the private sale value as possible. They'll insist to buy on wholesale. Insist somewhere in the middle of the two. The tax savings will make the trade-in (net) more viable than a private sale.
Best of luck.
