Changing Mirror Caps
Changing Mirror Caps
I got my new chrome mirror caps to replace the black ones today for my 09. I have searched and came across the procedure for removing these mirror caps. The question I have is on the clips that hold the glass to the motor. Are they the bigger looking ones or are they the little smaller ones? And how do you go about getting all the clips free? Just thought I would get some hints and suggestions before attempting this again. Trying not to break the glass is my goal. After getting the glass removed then there are 4 torx screws to remove and the mirror cap will come off is what I read.
Here is a picture of the glass removed. I circled what I believe is the clips holding it on. And the way I see it there are 8 of them. How do you go about releasing all these clips to get this glass off?
I used a flathead to push the clip down a little and just pulled with even pressure, there's 4 total.. get the top two off, then one of the bottoms and she'll come right off... unscrew the 3 torx bolts, then stick your flathead into the slots not far from these screw holes (should be a seperate hole for the flathead)
NOTE: you have to push the top clips down (you'll feel it with the screwdriver, just follow the curve till you hit the clip, and that's where you apply pressure) and the bottom clips up to remove.
I spent 45 minutes on the first one cause I thought you had to push DOWN on all the clips... nope, top ones down, bottom ones up. The second skullcap took about 5 minutes.

Well I was able to get both old covers off and new ones on with no broken mirror.
There are 8 little fingers that hold the mirror to the motor hub but actually only 4 clips. These are the bigger tabs. I used a screw driver and twisted it between these 4 clips, which releases the little fingers from the hub. I started at the bottom two then went to the top ones. One of the top ones doesn't have a little tab to twist so I saved this one for last and the glass slides off once the other three are released.
After the glass was off, remove 4 torx screws and then I was able to pull the cover out a little from the mirror housing and used a long skinny flat tip screw driver to relase the tabs on the mirror cap.
So if anyone is interested in a set of Black mirror covers (regular non TT mirrors) i have a set for sale. PM me if interested.

Now on towards smoking those mirror reflectors.

that is exactly what I want to do to my truck. My '13 XLT came with the chrome package but the tops of the mirrors were not, so I want to upgrade. Can you give us some additional details on where you got the caps and anything else you can think of?
Side thread, but I also want to put in the front facing LEDs in the mirrors as well. Have seen all sorts of DIY units but I haven't seen any OEM looking units that I can just swap out the original units with, any help out there guys?
Thanks,

Doesn't recon sell a couple of different choices for replacement reflectors with LEDs? I'm sure they are smoked or clear vs the stock amber but I think that's as close as you can get without going the DIY route.
