Mods...what voids a warranty???

Does anyone know what will void a warranty...

I plan on doing more work like tuner, exhaust.....maybe blistien shocks....I do not want to void my warranty....any first hand knowledge of what can be done and can't.

Thanks.

It all depends on the dealer and their attitude. With some dealers, you have already voided your warranty for certain problems. The CAI would void for any fuel related issue, if they chose to blame it. The lift and heavy wheels could be blamed for any drivline failure or tranny failure. Most of them will blame a tuner for any engine failure. All mods become an "out" for them. The problem is that you can't prove them wrong.

If you do a tuner just put it back to stock if or when you take in for work.

Perfectly said.

Your truck is making strange noises? Oh, sorry, those aren't the original wipers, can't help you.
Your truck bed is bouncing? Oh, sorry, those aren't your original tires, can't help you.
Your A/C isn't cold enough? Oh, sorry, you added a mesh grille insert between your overriders that is blocking airflow to engine components thereby heating things under your hood, can't help you.

Basically, leave it stock and take it to the dealer whenever it needs something, or else be prepared to fight (you may not have to, some dealers are helpful, but be prepared).

In my humble opinion, most mods I see are either ridiculous, make the truck look like crap, or fun to see the ingenuity but again really add nothing worthwhile or detract from the beauty Ford has already created. I do enjoy seeing most of the mods though, to see the craziness and perhaps bits of "hey that's an idea". But occasionally a stroke of brilliance results - for example, Barritia's 2nd USB port mod. Ford, why didn't you just put one in the armrest bin, eh?! But the mods where people put on massive tires, level their truck, or replace the grille with what is almost always a much worse looking grille, I could do without those. You really need 84" tires? I'm waiting to see if anyone does a mod-retrofit of the new rear window w/defrost on the 2010 onto their 2009.

It must not be a power sliding rear window then on the 09.

In 2010 you can get a power sliding rear window with the rear defroster where in 09 it was one or the other but not both.

I would agree 100% with this, and my dealer was an *** when it came down to me having an injector failure. You can turn it back to stock all you want, they will know it was there still and potentially screw you over hard like they did me.

The moss magnuson act is there to protect all of us that modify our cars from dealers that try to screw us, problem is it becomes a court battle. Basically what moss-magnuson says is they have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the modification caused the failure.

Chances are you'll have to fight against Ford for a real warranty issue, with or without mods.

I've been battling against Ford on an upholstery issue. Ford seems willing to battle with customers on warranty issues. Ford may win that battle against the consumer but Ford will lose the war. Chum up with your service advisor or manager - you'll probably need their help seeking warranty repair.

If Ford was smarter they would offer these mods in house......EsP if they told the customer if you get the work done here your warranty will not be affected....get the work done elsewhere and we may not cover your 45k dollar truck!!!

It depends.

If you have a cold air intake installed, and your rear power sliding window quits working, you're good.

If you have a 6" lift and 35s installed and come complaining about a vibration, you're SOL.

If you go to a dealership that has a bunch of questionables on their 126 report and they're in danger of being audited, legitimate or not, and they see an opening to try and shove you away, they're gonna use it.

If you go to a dealership with level one status that has a good 126, they may be more apt to look the other way for certain modifications.

The trucks are already expensive enough, and dealing with most aftermarket outfits to get stuff fixed under warranty sucks. Ford doesn't offer these things from the factory because they're in business to build solid, reliable F150s with features that most consumers will like and enjoy - they do this better than any outfit from the aftermarket can.

My dealer told me that adding a CAI would void the warranty on the entire engine.

Potentially, but that's reaching. If you were to say have a lower engine noise and/or lack of oil pressure, and the dealer sent an oil sample out for analysis and determined that there was excessive dirt/dust/grit whatever in the oil, a case could be made that your cold air kit did not filter the incoming air sufficiently.

Like I said, that's grasping for straws, but yeah, they could make a case based on that.

There is an old saying... The stock never goes out of style.

Hence the reason most of my appearance mods use factory parts.

I find this all funny because im sure some of you have noticed brand new trucks lifted with wheels and tires being sold at some dealerships, but will say nothing about it then. I dont know how many ive seen here in KC that are leveled with big wheels and tires. I wonder if they cover the warranty when the ball joints where out? Hmmm.

I've noticed leveling kits and 33"s on new trucks at a couple of dealers. I asked how long they've been doing it and the responses were "for a few years" and "for as long as I've been here" (14+ years).
