Power Tailgate Lock?

Anyone installed a power tailgate lock? I ordered one about a month ago (back ordered) from JC Whitney and just got it today. I bought it with a coupon for $85 with free shipping. The shipping would have been about $15, but I chated with the on-line rep, who gave me the free shipping.

Anyway, just wondering if anyone has installed one. The instructions could be more detailed, but......it's supposed to lock/unlock your tailgate when you lock/unlock your doors. I am using a BlakFlip HD and wanted this to make getting into the bed easier.

Here is a link: http://www.jcwhitney.com/POWER-TAILG...ailgate%20lock

I have only seen the cheap $5 actuators people have used from ebay with their own mounting brackets and wiring. Couple the lock with the system and a door popper on an AUX channel of an alarm and get an EZ down and watch the tailgate unlock, pop, and drop.

txarsoncop 06-25-2009 07:48 PM

WOW!!! I did mine for probably $15 - $20. BUT I did have to fab my own bracket up and cut and bend my own actuator rod. If you didn't want to or didn't know how then the kit is probably worth the cost.

Since I don't know what your instructions say and the pic isn't real clear on the actuator it's kinda hard to be helpful.

I ran my wiring ('05 Screw) through a pre-existing hole out the bottom of the tailgate and through another hole that was fairly close to it at the end of the bed. Then ran the wiring IN the frame on the passenger side up to the cab and spliced to door lock wiring in the door sill.

I went with a Dynolock on mine a while back. I had a Pace Edwards from my last two trucks that I replaced. Makes it a lot easier and convenient to lock the tailgate when you have a cover on.

ibcop 06-25-2009 08:54 PM

Thanks for the responses. I figured it was pricey, but hey....plug and play.

Txarsoncop - you ran your wires to the passenger side? I guess it doesn't matter which side, but the directions I have said to go to the driver's side. Thanks for the input! Be safe!

txarsoncop 06-26-2009 08:27 AM

Yeah, I went to passenger side. There was a member here who had posted this link: Dave's power tailgate lock

These were the instructions I followed. *Except for the multiple zip-tie solution*

My wires were the same colors as the instructions noted.

Update

Well, I went to install the tailgate lock this morning - no dice. It seems this kit was made for the 1997 and up models. The part fits fine, but the wiring colors are not the same. I went as far as pulling off the driver's side rear door to look at the wires - I don't even have the colors they claim I am supposed to tap into.

I did a Google search and found some info, but even with this I didn't have one of the colors:

http://www.dtdesign.net/vehicle_wiring_chart.pdf

It shows the 09's as using Gray/Black to lock and Lt. Blue/Lt. Green to unlock. I have the Gray/Black, but no Lt. Blue/Lt.Green

These are the colors I have at the plug:

Gray/Black

Purple/White

Black/Yellow

Green

I dunno.....it's like an inferno outside and I am somewhat torked - back this beyatch goes!

Anyone have any additional information?

DeereGeff 06-27-2009 01:39 PM

I ran my wires to the drivers side door sill area and after some help from Deano-FX4, I found the wires I needed.

There are instructions on the site as well. I will tell you the wires on my Platinum were different than the 2008's. With the help of Deano-FX4 I located the correct wires on my truck. Here is his response back to me on the wires.

Here is a shot of the wires and where I tapped in;

Lol, never mind. I answered too late.

BrainDonor 06-27-2009 02:02 PM

So, Geff, you hit the gray/brown and blue/green? It looks like you also tapped the gray/violet (the one with the electrical tape)?

The other connections are for my Viper 991 alarm/remote start.

ibcop 06-27-2009 02:27 PM

Thanks for the info. I don't think this kit is up to snuff - I am now looking at a Pace Edwards kit. I've sent an email off to them in order to confirm the make one for the 09's (their web site doesn't show it) and as soon as I hear back, I'm gonna order one.

Now that is pretty cool - would love that self opening tailgate on my 09 Platinum - but not that technically inclined - anybody know of a quality installer type in san diego?

jhaskin4 10-10-2009 05:53 PM

ok - I am confused.... i bought the pace edwards kit (plug and play), but the instructions on wiring seem different than i have read here.

They say to run the wiring kit under the truck and up inside the firewall in the engine compartment. It appears they wire to the battery power, and then have wires run from relays into the drivers door panel to get to the lock/unlock wires.

installs here seem to be done without relays....

Am I reading the instructions correctly? Do the relays etc sit in the engine compartment?

Thanks for any help.

The Pace Edwards kit require the relay - I initially had a PE kit as well and this is what I didn't like. I returned it and went with the latest version from Dynolock. Plus the wire colors from PE were all screwed up.

PM me and I will give you the part number I have from Dynolock. The latest version from them is sturdier than previous models. They too had the wrong wiring colors, but I did email them with the correct colors.

Let me know if I can help.

I have the Dynolock too. actually I was sent the wrong bracket and was told I could bend it to make it work (or I could have sent it back). I bent it and it works fine. But the bracket was kind of flimsy and I had to use some tie straps to keep it tight inside my tailgate so it wouldn't rattle. So did they beef up the bracket on the latest models?

Yeah, they basically used two pieces of the pre-fabbed metal instead of the normal one. But it does hold well. No issues thus far, plus it's nice to have the lock/unlock feature on the tailgate. Some simple stuff goes a long way!

jhaskin4 10-11-2009 06:50 PM

Actually got the kit out today. Took the tailgate apart, and based on the instructions (which are awful) i cannot see how the actuator which they are saying mounts to the left of the handle works the lock mechanism to the right of the handle. Totally lost..... Any help much appreciated.

The locking pin will go across the metal bracket inside the handle, preventing the handle to operate unless the pin retracts when unlocked. It should line up on the left hand bolt (remove the 10mm nut).

I agree - the instructions suck.

jhaskin4 10-11-2009 07:08 PM

Thanks to Ibcop - I get it now.... so the actuator does work...now on to the wiring. Ugh.

I sent you the door lock diagram to your email address.

jhaskin4 10-11-2009 08:17 PM

This kit is going back. While I get the actuator now, the wiring is CLEARLY not for an 09. And the directions were dismal. I think you should expect more when coughing up that much for a kit solution. I could have done some mods to make it work - but that kind of defeats the purpose of the kit. Thanks for all the help. Dynolock on order.

Wait until you see the difference in kits....let me know how it goes!

Are the wiring colors the same on an XLT? Opening the passenger rear sill plate, it doesn't appear so.

SteveVFX4 10-14-2009 07:00 PM

yes the colors should the same. however you need to look further up along the front driver's side door sill.

lock motor wire is gray/brown
unlock motor wire is blue/green

Connect the Dynolock wires to them. If the Dynolock does the opposite of what your door locks do, then you just have to reverse the Dynolock wires.

You can tap into the wires at the pillar as well, in case you don't wanna run the wire further up. The only draw back is if you tap the rear door, you'll have to push the unlock button twice on the FOB to get the tail gate to unlock.

Gray/Brown
Violet/Gray

Again, this is at the pillar - the same colors as Steve listed for the front driver door. Depending on what instruction sheet you got from Dynolock, they may or may not have the correct wires listed.

BrainDonor 10-14-2009 09:59 PM

I didn't buy the dynolock. In an effort to save a little $ for the remote start install on Friday, I decided to wire in an actuator myself. my brother in law helped. we created our own mounting bracket and just bolted it in and wired it up. I don't know why I was hemming and hawing on this so long.

jhaskin4 10-17-2009 05:52 PM

Dynolock

Got the kit yesterday - the bracket is pretty beefy, and clearly fits better than the PE one. I installed the actuator and the short harness, but ran out of time today and only ran the short harness out of the tailgate and put the tailgate cover back. Have to wait for next weekend to finish the wiring.

Good deal!

3kgtSL91 10-18-2009 02:44 AM

just ordered my dynolock after reading this thread! thanks :)

fjc 10-18-2009 09:02 AM

I think this will be one of the first mods to my truck once I get it. I'm always picking up kids from events, it'd be nice to be able to unlock the tailgate without having to shut off the engine and hand them the keys so they can unlock it to throw their crap in the bed.

How hard was it to run the wire underneath and into the cab?

jhaskin4 10-25-2009 06:49 PM

Just wired mine today.

Not hard to run the wires - there is a convenient rubber plug at the back of the cab. I was a little brain dead and it took me a while to find the right wires in the driver's door sill - be sure to look there and not in the back door sill. The pic in the thread above is exactly right for an 09 Platinum.
I had to bend the dynolock bracket some to get everything working exactly right.

Glad you got it installed.

Where is the best place to order these from? I've searched some and the only place I've really seen is straight from the dynolock site. Any other sites out there with a beter place? My B-day is in 2 1/2 weeks so buying myself some more mods. :D

jhaskin4 10-25-2009 10:30 PM

Ordered mine from the Dynolock site.

I have to say, the folks in this forum are just great people - thanks to Ibcop for the followup call today.

I think you only can get them through www.dynolock.com

I spoke with "Jim" when I ordered mine. Great guy to deal with.
