Poll: Tailgate step and side steps
#16
I got the tailgate step and have enjoyed it greatly. It is a mutiple purpose tool I think. So far I've used it to obviously get into the bed of the truck, also used it as a seat while tailgating, and again used it as a seat while fishing. My wife loves it as she has a hip injury and it was very difficult for her to get into the bed of my previous truck.

Same here...I think the sidesteps would have been great, as I'm always climbing on the tire to get things out of the side of the bed, but passed on the man step...just didn't think I would use it much and not a fan of how the handle fits into the tailgate. I plan on eventually having my bed sprayed and will do the inside of the tailgate as well.

My 6.5 foot platinum did not come with the side steps. It was the ONLY option my wife wanted. I asked around on the forums and found a guy nearby who didn't like the look and he sold his to me. They are mounted with 6 bolts and two studs. The studs stayed in his frame, and my truck didn't have the studs. I just used the six bolts and they installed in about 30 minutes. Most of that is jockeying the things around by myself to get the holes to line up. Heavy SOBs.
I'm glad got them.
The tailgate step is great. I'm not getting any younger either. Huey can make all the fun of me he wants! Heated/cooled seats...all the bells and whistles!! Life's too short to smoke cheap cigars!
The flipping tailgate is a heavy bear though. I added Ez-lift (yes they do fit on 2009) and that helps a little even though mostly for lowering.

I bought my truck off the lot with the tailgate step. It wasn't an option I was interested in and figured it was just a novelty. Boy am I glad I have it. I use it more than I would have ever imagined.
As far as making the tailgate heavier, makes sense. However the tailgate is a lot easier to lift than my old 98' F150. My 8 year old daughter manages the tailgate on my 09 just fine.

I just took delivery of a new truck '09. I got both the side steps and the tailgate step. It is just a convenience to help with cargo. I had to stand on rear tire in my '05 to get anything out of the bed. It just comes down to personal taste is all. I would say get them if you are ordering a truck and side steps with the 6.5 if you get it.
One thing that didn't come on my truck that I wanted was the cargo management system.

I opted for the tailgate step but not the side steps. I felt that the truck was a low rider already and I didn't want anything else hanging down. I never use the tailgate step as it is quicker just to hop up into the bed. I did pull the step out and put the tailgate up and use it as a spoiler though. It actually looks pretty cool.
