Sync WILL work with an Aftermarket Radio
Sync WILL work with an Aftermarket Radio
I figured I would provide this info b/c I know some of you guys are thinking of going the aftermarket route but probably wasn't sure if you could keep SYNC along with it. Well I've had to the pleasure to use SYNC for over a year now b/c the first Ford vehicle it was installed in was the Focus (if I'm not mistaken) My lady has a 08 Focus coupe and I was thinking of doing this for her but wasn't sure if it would work but now I know it will. Metra makes a kit that will take care of this for you.

For what it is worth...
After going through the issue of determining if you could add the factory navigation/stereo to an existing 2009 F150 with SYNC (which, by the way, you cannot), I was told specifically by the dealer's service manager and through him directly from Ford that the 2009 F150 (and another 2009 model, don't remember what it was because I didn't care) were different than other models that had the SYNC system.
In short, that it was not possible, at this time, to add an aftermarket system and retain the use of the SYNC system in a 2009 F150. This is because of the integrated LED and the inclusion of the climate controls, etc. in to it.
Don't shoot the messenger
I cannot confirm nor deny the validity of the information, only that is came from Ford directly (which, you never know, may in fact be self serving on their part).
Would be great to see if someone has actually tried it and not speculated if it is possible or not on a F150 and not another model.

I'm sorry guys if I gave out some mis info. I know that for the Focus you can retain all of SYNc features with the Metra kit. You can also still have all of you info display on the Focus screen. I thought that maybe Metra had this figured out already for the 09. Give them some time guys. If they have this figured out for the the Focus already the 09 150 can't be that much harder to figure out.
I've seen it before but I still have a concern with it. The F150 (not sure about other vehicles with SYNC like the focus) has an external LCD that displays SYNC info, wish they would say if you could retain that LCD rather than the junky looking one they send with the kit. I emailed Metra about this and the only thing I got in response was "You need kit AFSI-01."
